One of my old highschool friends pointed me to something really cool.
www.pandora.com
It's basically a Music Genome Project, put to practical application. These guys have dissected music across the boards, from classical music all the way up through techno, rock and jazz.
What happens is, you give it the name of a band or a song, it dissects the base musical qualities and properties of what you give it, then it arranges a playlist of artists and songs that reasonably match the original. It's got a pretty good selection.
The greatest part is, it works like a charm, and you can customize what you hear. You can tell them you like a certain song and hear it more often, you can bump a song off the list if you don't, and if they're playing a song too much, you can just nudge it off the list for a month. You can create and save playlists and come back to them later.
You do have to create an account to listen for any more than half an hour a day, but the account is free. you just need an email, some very basic personal information and a general zip code.
So go! Do it! Do it nao!
And while you're at it, if you like it, drop me some songs to start a channel based on. =)
[edit] Shit, I guess I'm a little behind the times. Everyone knows about it but me! XD
