We didn't have anything planned originally, but Nick happened to come across a Carbon Leaf flyer in Chapel Hill and, knowing that they're one of my very favorite bands, he picked up tickets! The show was technically Friday the 13th, but it ran into the wee hours of Saturday morning. I'd never seen Carbon Leaf in person, and I was very impressed! So many bands suck outside the augmented confines of a recording studio, but they were every bit as good live.
They announced the release date of their new CD mid-way through the show, and it just so happens to come out on my birthday. Happy coincidence!
Also worth a mention was the opening band, Trip, a local group whose sound reminded me of Better than Ezra. While I didn't dig their music as much as the main act, I'll say that the band members had better on-stage chemistry. Nothing makes me grin like people who are clearly best friends having a good time.
Yesterday we went and saw Push with some friends, then hung around playing Rock Band until some obscene hour. My drummin' arms, they are sore, and my pinkies are bruised from stick rebound. I managed to sing myself hoarse somewhere between Friday and Saturday night, and while I might not be easy on the ears, I can at least hit pitch.
Now to wrap up the weekend with homemade crabcakes. To the frying pan!
