Stolen from book_memes

1. Which book has been on your shelves the longest?
I don't even know anymore. My book collection has been divided, thrown back together, and divided so many times that I can't remember which book I've had the longest. I do, however, know that I have some books that were once on my dad's bookshelf... The exact copies, I mean.

2. What is your current read, your last read and the book you’ll read next?
Last read: Stephen King (as Richard Bachman), Thinner. It was definitely not an uplifting read.
Currently reading: Richard Castle (or, a ghostwriter), Heat Wave. In case you don't watch Castle on ABC, you should. It's great.
Book I'll most likely read next: Kerry Cohen, Loose Girl: A Memoir of Promiscuity. I don't know where I find these things. The titles just stand out and I pick them up. Got this one at Target.

3. What book did everyone like and you hated?
You know, it's usually backwards for me. I usually love books that people hate. For instance, when my junior class had to read Frankenstein for a class assignment, I was probably the only one who really loved it. Everyone else thought it was too wordy, but I didn't care.

4. Which book do you keep telling yourself you’ll read, but you probably won’t?
That's easy: Mein Kampf. Holy shit, is it boring. I have a hard time getting past page 2 every time I pick it up. How the hell am I supposed to read the whole damn thing, Hitler?!

5. Which book are you saving for “retirement?”
Retirement of what? My retirement? Oh hell, if I saved for that I'd have about five bookshelves worth to read (probably more). If you mean, retirement of a book, I don't know. I'm pretty sure I have some editions of books on my shelves by Stephen King that are no longer in print.

6. Last page: read it first or wait till the end?
Well, it depends. Mostly I like to wait until the end, but I read the last page of Thinner when I was about 50 pages into the book.

7. Acknowledgements: waste of ink and paper or interesting aside?
I usually skip the acknowledgements. I get that the Author feels he or she needs to thank certain people, or mention people that helped them in researching, but to me it's mostly boring.

8. Which book character would you switch places with?
Believe it or not, I'd switch places easily with Mia from The Princess Diaries. I don't even know why. lol

9. Do you have a book that reminds you of something specific in your life (a person, a place, a time)?
Not so much. Music does that more for me than books.

10. Name a book you acquired in some interesting way.
In high school, my senior year english teacher was getting rid of a lot of books. A classmate and I dug through and got a bunch of things. It's how I acquired a copy of War & Peace.

11. Have you ever given away a book for a special reason to a special person?
No. I'm not big into giving away books. I'm one of those people who always thinks, "What if I want to read it sometime down the road?" I will, however, buy someone a book.

12. Which book has been with you to the most places?
I don't know that one, either. I often travel with books, usually ones that I haven't read yet.

13. Any “required reading” you hated in high school that wasn’t so bad ten years later?
Not yet. Most of the things I enjoyed reading in high school I still enjoy. However, I haven't been out of high school 10 years yet, so maybe Heart of Darkness won't seem so bad the second time around.

14. What is the strangest item you’ve ever found in a book?
Nothing too strange. Usually receipts from some book store or a library receipt.

15. Used or brand new?
Either. All my books end up tattered and well-loved, anyway.

16. Stephen King: Literary genius or opiate of the masses?
Despite what everyone else thinks, I *heart* Stephen King. I think he's a genius. Granted, I don't always enjoy his works (I will never read Dreamcatcher again). However, there are some books that are brilliant (From a Buick 8, Carrie). A lot of his genius comes in creating characters we can get to know and really root for--or hate.

17. Have you ever seen a movie you liked better than the book?
The Twilight Saga will never be better than on film. The books were terrible. The writing was horrible. The movies were marginally better. So far, I'm loving the third one the best, but only because Jasper is hilarious. Also, Emmett made the first movie for me when he waved at Bella with a carving knife in his hand.

18. Conversely, which book should NEVER have been introduced to celluloid?
Ohmigod there are so many. The Twilight books are again at the top of that list. But outside that... You know, I really can't think of any right now. I've seen so many movies lately that I just can't think of one or two that just should have stayed a book!

19. Have you ever read a book that's made you hungry, cookbooks being excluded from this question?
Not yet, but I have read one that made me lose my appetite. Rick Yancey's The Monstrumologist is one of the most excellent young adult books I've read. Do not read this while eating.

20. Who is the person whose book advice you’ll always take?
I take book advice from almost anyone, as long as they can give me a sound reason for liking a book (outside of, "I really like this author"). Liking an author is all well and good, but that's not a good enough reason for me to read a book.

If you do this one in your own journal, leave a comment so I can find it and read it!
