I wonder what it's like to have a real friend. Someone I could tell what I'm feeling without being judged or, worse yet, having that person be indifferent to it

My Scoot-sense must have been tingling, because this is the first time I've been here in a few weeks.
If you cannot count on your wife as a friend, then yes, it is difficult to find those good, real friends. I don't have one either beyond Julie...
And I like Adam's idea actually. Why not start a podcast? Talk about your issues. you are not alone. The audience will find you, and you may very well find that true friend through there.
And btw, you are the only friend from the old group that I regularly communicate with.
I honestly second pretty much all of this. I communicate better with the written word, and when I hit the mics, I sound pretty tool-ish, but yet, people like what I have to say.
Seriously, the way you feel is not unique. Odds are, many people feel the same way. By communicating what you feel, you not only help yourself, but you end up helping others as well.
This truly is a case of, "If you build it, they will come."
Make some notes, create an outline, cut a practice ep.
