Hell if I know. May 1st is in a week and I wish people would stop asking. Though I guess it's not their fault. Anyway, so here's the status quo on colleges:
It sounds like Carleton is the best fit. I'd go with that, despite the higher cost. I went out of state to a big school like I wanted, even though I knew I'd wrack up all sorts of debt. My family never had any money and was always in debt, though, so I was already used to the idea of owing money. lol
I don't regret the university I chose for a minute because those were the best four years of my entire life and really helped to shape me as an individual. The human aspect is what's most important, imo, so take that opportunity to grow in the environment that you feel is right for you and don't worry about the cost just yet. It's most important to ensure that you have a good foundation for when you're truly off on your own. It's no good to save money while stifling personal growth.
I don't know what it's like to live with any debt, let alone a huge one.
Oh it's not so bad. Just...don't think about it too much. I owe something like fifty or sixty thousand in student loans. Five thousand or so in credit card debt and my credit score is pathetic.
But pretty much everyone else is in the same boat around these parts when they get out of college, so it's ok.
You can get creative with not only finding money to help pay the loans off, but also doing some really awesome humanitarian work. Do a term or two with AmeriCorps or the Peace Corps. I did AmeriCorps. You get an ed award at the end and part of your interest paid off and you get to make a difference at the same time.
