L'été

Summer home thus far has been nice, Officially Nice. Here are some recaps beyond I joined the MSP Frontrunners.

My car (!!!) which was a bit on the broken side was not as desperately ill as I had feared. The battery had just run out so we charged it and ever since then it has worked great. The engine turns off when I'm braking and going slow since idling wastes a lot of gas. My mpg is usually in the 30's which is exciting.

I went to IA for a family reunion of the Burkgrens (Gramma Dorothy's cousins) and I met a third cousin who knows a high school friend since they are both reporters in rural Iowa/Minnesota (border area.) Crazy small world story! I thought it was pretty rad.

They aired the remaining "Pushing Daisies" episodes and the last one was so not a decent episode, and I have since gotten the second season on DVD. I forgot how much I loved this show. That second to last sentence did not make sense. Anyway the last episode was supposed to wrap everything up, but there was just so much more to develop.

My mom's mom passed away. For three weeks my mom and aunt held vigil for her (by vigil I mean staying overnight with her so they could be with her when she passed). I would relieve them in the afternoons so they could eat and sleep and do errands. It was... an interesting experience, and if you ask I can develop that thought more. She died at 9:30pm-ish July 4th, just as the fireworks started. My mom, aunt, sister Katie, and myself were there. There was a lot of talk about what readings and what songs to sing. I say sing because that was the intention, but when it came time to sing "I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say" (tune of "Dives and Lazarus") I couldn't and now I get really sad if I think of that song. But the service was nice, and seeing family and friends and old neighbors was nice. But it has killed my ability to sleep well. There were also times when I was floored by the lack of decorum by Evil Sister.

Speaking of, I can not share a bathroom with her and so I moved into my aunt's house. Much simpler to share a bathroom with Katie than Liz. And I don't have to deal with her then. She and Katie started to argue on the car trip from my cousin's wedding to the farm. They also argued the next morning in the farmhouse. The farm has always been a special place for me and I just couldn't believe that's where they were arguing. It's like fighting in a church, or ruined abbey or some great institution that you believe in.

Last Wednesday we did corn, but no one knows how much we did. I think the word is around 100 dozen ears. Thursday I loafed around the farm to recover, and Friday we did corn again. This time it was all measured out and we did 77 pints (corn cut from the cob). Katie came just as dinner was ready for those that helped. After people left Katie and I were picking apples for a pie when some of the Stewart cousins came. They helped get more apples. We determined that those apples would not make good pie so we made 5 quarts of applesauce. Saturday before we went to the wedding we picked a peck of green beans and froze about half the peck, 10.5 pints in all. It was very productive, but it wore me out and now I'm fighting a cold.

There will be more later, mostly connecting with high school friends, and the gay running. But later.
