The best way to create chaos, Steerpike felt, was to attack at random. Which is how he found himself, dressed head to toe in varying shades of black, his face covered even over the mask, outside the door to room 512. He didn't even know the girls who lived there, beyond occasionally seeing them in classes and in the hallways ( Read more... )

Evie came back humming happily from her Final in Fairy Tales, then stopped short in the doorway.

"My notes!" She rushed forward, scrambling frantically through her notes for Artifacts and God and started screeching. "Oh no no no no no no, who, why, NO!"

Tears started as she became more frantic, trying to reconstruct exactly what was lost, until she was just sitting hopelessly on the floor, pathetic and disbelieving.

Layla gasped when she came in and saw Evie on the floor. "Evie! What's wrong?" she asked, kneeling down beside her. "Are you okay?"

"My notes," Evie wailed, looking devasted. "All my notes for my last two classes are messed up and marked up and some of them are missing and I, I still have two finals and oh my god, I'm going to flunk!"

"You're not going to flunk. Just try to relax," Layla said. She looked around the room quickly, trying to figure out how her notes could have gotten so messed up. "Can you clean them up maybe?"

"The ones that are still here, some of them..." Evie sniffled, and showed Layla the pile she'd been able to reconstruct. "But half of the rest have ink spilled all over them, and who would do this? It's mean, it's petty, it's-- why would anyone..." She patted her notes as if they were her dolls, and shook her head, looking mournful and hurt. "I didn't think anyone disliked me here."

"I didn't think anyone did either." Layla pouted and leaned over to give Evie a hug. "Maybe it was an accident. Maybe somebody else's notes were supposed to get messed up, but whoever it was got the room wrong."

She wiped her eyes, looking hopeful, if still a little upset. "You think so? Really?" She sniffed and looked thoughtful. "Oh, that's awful." She hugged Layla back, then picked up her notes. "That means someone *else's* notes are in danger too. Should we tell someone that our room was broken into?"

"We probably should, yeah. And hey, if other people know that your notes got screwed up, maybe they'll share theirs with you." Layla pointed out. "Is there anyone you'd trust enough to have taken good notes?"

Evie cheered up a little more, and got a handkerchief, wiping her eyes off. "Hermione, in my Gods class. And Dawn is the T.A. in Artifacts, she or Sam Winchester would have taken good notes." She took a deep breath. "Oh, but I *wish* I had mine." She sighed. "Have to make the best of it, though. Should we go tell Principal Washburn tomorrow? Or do you think there's time to catch her today?"

"We should probably tell her tomorrow. Maybe grab her in the morning or something. Today, we can worry about getting you some functional notes, because there will be no flunking! It's not allowed!" She giggled, hoping her enthusiasm would be a little contagious.

"No!" Evie shook her papers and said, "I will *not* be thwarted from getting A's! This is unacceptable!" She gave Layla a small, watery giggle. "Thank you, Layla. This will be better tomorrow. When I have *new* notes."
