I have a hard time trusting people who always push to be in a position of power.  You probably know someone like this.  The person at school who as a sophomore somehow managed to become president of every single club or organization they joined as a freshman.  Politicians who push their legislation not because it is the best solution or because they think it will get passed, but because they want to be able to point to it in the future and say 'look what i did! put me in charge!'  The people for whom it isn't enough to be in charge of their own lives, they have such great insight into what is best that they need to be in charge of other people's lives as well.  Yes, there is a huge difference between these people and 'leaders'.  I have infinitely more respect for someone who contributes out of a genuine desire to help the greater cause (whatever it may be), than someone whose contributions may help the group, but are merely done to advance in rank or power within that group.  I can think of several reasons why someone might act in that way, none of which give me any reason to show them any respect.
