So, today's my niece's 3rd birthday. I'm due to meet them for dinner at Mr. Gatti's in Lake Charles in an hour. I called her earlier to tell her Happy Birthday, plus, she loves talking on the phone. I mentioned that I had more presents for her (I say more, because I've been showering her with clothes and ice cream trip all month -- hey, I'm her godmother, too, it's my duty!) and the conversation went as follows:
ME:Hey, Happy Birthday!
PAYTON: Hey, Happy Birthday! *sings Happy Birthday*
ME: I got you some more presents.
PAYTON: Presents?
ME: Yep.
PAYTON: Hey, what?
ME: What?
PAYTON: What is it?
ME: I can't tell you! You have to wait until tonight. I love you!
PAYTON: Hey, what?
ME: Presents?
PAYTON: Uh-huh.
ME: You'll get them tonight! I love you.
PAYTON: I love you.
One-track mind, much? That's my girl.
So, some quick reviews of things I've watched recently. The next bit is about Ashes to Ashes, spoilers my dears!
So, yes, all those who assured me it picked up at the end were definitely right. And god, every shot of Gene made me melt. That man! Oh, that man! Most of the twists I saw coming, but, as with Dexter, even if I can see what's going to happen, if it's entertaining, I don't care. It's about storytelling. And the show definitely picked up its. When the dad was reading to Alex and talked about how the family's relationship was special and forever, I immediately thought "Fuck. He did it." And, I was right. But still, I didn't catch the Dad=clown.
Though, that makes me wonder. Will the Clown be gone? I kind of took it to represent something that was haunting her that she couldn't put her finger on. Some connection she had missed. And now that she's realized it's her dad, does it stop haunting her? She's still in the 80s, but I don't know, made me wonder. Also, I know I had mentioned the show was pretty formualic in terms of redoing things as Life on Mars had done, and it seems both Alex and Sam had things with their dad to figure out. And the first season was very personal in terms of their pasts. I wonder how the second season/series will go in terms of arc. Hey, as long as there's more Gene, I'm happy! Which reminds me, I want him to pick me up and carry me! Lucky Alex and wee!Alex! I also think the show did a nice job keeping anything solid and conclusive about what's really happening open in terms of the time traveling/other realities/comatose Narnias and whatnot.
Randomness: I was checking Keeley Hawes' IMDb page. My God. I've seen her so many times and didn't recognize her! If I had a nickel for everytime I said that...
Some movie rundowns:
Love Me if You Dare - cute French movie. Very...French. Which is a good thing. Marion Cotillard is in it, which I didn't know until I had already Netflixed. Most of it was good. One bit irked me, though. My problem with some longterm romance movies is when the main couple branch off and get together with other people. And those innocent bystanders really care for the central couple and they get hurt. And some movies just skip over it like we're supposed to ignore it. And I just can't. I just don't think it's fair. But otherwise, the movie was cute and enjoyable.
Wasabi - This movie was definitely NOT what I was expecting. I read the synopsis and it sounded like an action/thriller. I was wondering why
zzb recced it to me. It didn't seem like my kind of movie. But then, I immediately saw why. It really is an action movie, but it is so goofy and self-aware of the goofiness! I kept laughing. And some of the stuff is just so out there. My laughter was usually followed with "What?" Another French film. And not just from France French, French style - at least from what I've seen. (Quirkiness with surrealism sprinkled in.) This and the previous French films I've seen leave me very open to more French cinema.
Elling - Finally got this in. It's the movie the play that the Simmster was in was based on. Simm is undeniably cuter than the lead in the original, but hey, I was pretty able to mentally pencil him in in some scenes. So there. The movie was extremely charming, so funny, and just plain wonderful. I actually almost cried at the end. Not sad tears, just "That's beautiful tears." I actually kind of want to learn how to speak Norwegian now, if only because it seems to have a lot of English cognates. (I think I just really want to learn more languages in general. Latin. I seriously want to learn Latin.)
