I loved The Girl Who Waited. Okay, so there were some plot holes big enough to drive a pick up truck through, but it's Doctor Who. Plot holes are what it thrives on.
This episode finally, really sold me on the great love of Amy and Rory. I know they've been saying for ages that they adore each other, that they're the centre of each other's universes etc... but I guess it never really rang completely true for me. Which was a shame, because I liked both characters individually, and I liked the angle that the wife was clearly the one wearing the metaphorical trousers, and that the husband was totally cool with that. I think the only time I properly bought it before was when they were reunited on Demon's Run.
But this episode did it. I officially ship them like the Titanic. Amy's line about Rory being the most beautiful man she'd ever met, to Rory's inability to leave Old Amy behind (seriously, I choked up a little when he went to undo that latch) - it was a gorgeous portrait of a gorgeous relationship. Comparisons have been drawn between this and Amy's Choice, essentially that this was Rory's Choice, but I actually think it was way more heartbreaking that that. Amy had to choose between Rory and the Doctor, two clearly separate individuals. Rory had to choose between Amy and... Amy.
Of course the Melody/River thing still hangs over it all, and that's where it falls to pieces. I just can't believe these two people have just decided to merrily truck on with their lives after having their newborn daughter literally snatched away from them by a psychotic cult. I mean what the hell?
