I finally got to watch a bone marrow procedure being done, or at least part of one. I thought I was tough. I sat through 2 autopsies no problem, so I can sit through a bone marrow procedure, right?
I confidently walked into the treatment room where there were 2 doctors and a nurse, and the patient lying on her side. Clean hip with iodine, pull out some long needles, freeze the area. As the physician repeatedly poked the needles in and out of the conscious patient's hip, the room got extremely hot. The physician cranked the large bore needle into the patient's hip, trying to get some aspirate (unsuccessfully). Everything started becoming fuzzy and my body felt like jelly. I eventually had to leave half way through because I wasn't feeling well. Disappointing! But man, those bone marrow biopsies... what a bitch to watch!
