Grandma Carter's 92nd birthday celebration today. Her message to Grandma Park, passed through me: "You are going to get through this. You can, and will, find strength you never knew you had. Just take it day by day."

It's about Grandpa,
but really, it's also about life.

So much laughter, bonding, young and old generations mixing with supportive smiles on their faces. So much expansive blue sky, brown grass, speckled only by trees and silos. So many tubes, beeping gadgets, groans. Eyelids as thin and translucent as a newborn's. I found myself saying to the nurse, as I helped give Grandpa the wet towel bath he was not conscious to receive, that it was my turn--after all the shifts he likely took with me as a baby. Circle of life, I suppose. So much miscommunication, festering hurt, and grudges accumulating still, everyday, masquerading as love. All mixed up bittersweet.

Life is messy. Painful. Acutely, gut wrenchingly painful.
It also holds the joy of a 7 year olds' laughter at having found a "treasure" in a shed full of junk. The deep peace and leaning wind that is special to the prairie.

Just take it day by day.
