Well, as any of my friends living in Newington parts of Edinburgh will know, last night was quite surreal. There was a power cut that spanned a whole region of the city (for the Geordies, about the size of jesmond) as a fire broke out on a small section of the particular grid my flat is on. It was quite surreal walking down the very dark main street to buy some baked beans and carrots, having to borrow a small torch off the shop owner to venture down the ominously dark isles, every now and then finding a candle dripping onto some tins (he was obviously determined to remain in business as usual). I also found it quite amusing to find a rabble of fellow fire jugglery type people spinning glow staffs along the street, apparently just having a wander for the hell of it. It’s great seeing people that little bit more aware of their world when something out of the ordinary happens; people seem to light up when the power goes out. For example there was a rather eccentric chappy not far down my street inspired to get his bagpipes out and play in the street when his lights went off, that amused me. I was in an adventuring mood and so wandered the most light deprived streets for a while before heading back home.
Lit my ever dwindling supply of candles (would never believe I used to own 72 of the bloody things!) and giving up on the deadlines I had just sat down to try and meet when the power went out, I curled up with some more sewing. I then realised how much of my clothing now either has a patchwork influence or looks as though it was inspired by a rag doll. I love making my own clothes, but doubt my developing style is the kind I could ever fashion to a job interview. Luckily I do still have lots of practical clothes, patches and straggly bits and the like do get in the way when cycling late to lectures.
...want to go buy more fabrics now. Resist urge, need to afford to eat.
