NextGenDarkFest 2010: Recs from Week 1
So there are a TON of amazing things happening over at nextgendarkfest if you haven't already noticed. So far, it's been a lot of chaos, carnage, sex, and despair. I eat that shit for breakfast, yo. YUM.
I'll be attempting every week to do a rec list of some of my favourites from the fest. This is by no means the only good fics/art submitted (they are all stellar!) but these are just my personal choices. Please head the warnings and go take a look - there are some fabulous rare pairs, AS/S, Harry/Scorpius, and literally everything in between.
ART REC:
Deaths That Separate - Snape/Lily Luna, R, NSFW
There is a reason I chose this piece of art for the first submission of the fest. It literally starts the fest out with a bang with the angst and heartbreak just dripping off the page. You will know the artist instantly (and if you don't, you will certainly want to once reveals go up), as her style and character development in just a single frame is exquisite. The sallow sneer on Snape's face, the absolute devastation and turmoil on Lily's - it's heartbreaking in the best of ways. ;-; So beautiful it might make you cry.
FIC RECS:
The Uncertainty of Light - AS/S, R, ~6k
I'm kind of out of the AS/S circle these days, but this fic is one that whipped me right back in. A really beautiful and sad take on sociopathy and mental disease and how it effects everyone. Cannot give away the ending, but you won't see it coming. And it will certainly give you reason to think.
The Bang and the Clatter - Tom Riddle/James Sirius, R, ~10k
ONE OF THE BEST FICS EVER WRITTEN AND CERTAINLY ONE OF MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITES FROM THIS FEST. **MUST READ!!** I cannot describe this fic in words, because it's something you just have to read. Just know that it gave me the kind of nightmares a really good Hitchcock psychological thriller might as well. So on par with the devious, erotic kind of manipulation only Tom Riddle can provide. And for such a willing vessel as James, it is just a train crash you really cannot look away from.
Even - Draco/Hugo, Ron, Scorpius, R, ~1k
Dear God. HEED THE WARNINGS. This fic encompasses so very much horror in just 1300 words. ;-; There's a lot of Really Bad Things, which all happen off-screen but which are no less horrifying because of this. This fic got under my skin in all the best and worst ways. Exquisite and so very real.
Burn and Bury All the Rest - Ginny/Hugo, James/Scorpius, NC-17, ~3k
Zombie inferi and incest ftw! This is a crazy fic in a really interesting way. I'm not a zombie or Inferi lover, but if you are (or even if you aren't), this fic offers a very frightening reality for the end of the world. ;-; Ginny is the only adult left and trying to save the remaining kids while fighting off zombie-like corpses of Ron and others. Ack. It's so sad and strangely beautiful at the end. Definitely worth a read.
