James isn't sure what possesses him to watch, but there's something about Scorpius' fragility in comparison to the vastness of the evening sky that is really striking

Wow, I totally loved this. It's sort of uncomfortable to read, really, because I tend to cling to beautiful-people!porn so much, with these guys muscled and hot and hard for each other, la, but it's so much grittier and real to see them this way. I loved the shifting POVs; without James's POV, he'd be so much more of a dick. :) He still is, but I love the insight into him as being so lost, so sure that he's going to let Harry down. Aw! I hope he can get more in touch with that gay or bisexual side of himself and stop being an idiot. And Scorp, AW! So amazing and scary with the teenage angst, but I love the hints of confidence that come through, too. He knows who he is already, and he's going to fight for his right to be that. Awesome.

I've been reading a lot of Nifty/ASSTR sorta porn recently (there's something addictive about the raw crapness of it - shittily written, but very, very explicit) - this scenario kind of reminds me of it a little, like if someone took one of the situations and made it *not* crap, and made the characters actual people, and gave them motivations that made sense and then had them behave in a plausible way. Scorpius, initially thinking he'd do anything for James, and James, thinking Scorpius is a worthless toe-rag, and that flaying, all-too-accurate speech Scorpius gave James, bloody ouch, but he deserved it utterly.

I really, really like that this isn't some tidy hook-up that goes well, but an awkward and slightly nasty situation that makes them feel horrible. :D.
