Summer was glad to be back in Fandom. She didn't want to be home right now. It was all too much of a reminder of Marissa, of how things should have been. Everything was changed now.
Newport just didn't feel like home anymore.
The first thing she did when she got to her room was drop her bags on the floor. She didn't have as many as she had when she left. This time, she'd only brought what she needed. She just didn't care about material things right now. They didn't matter any more.
The second thing she did was check her email. She spotted the handwavey one from Shawn first. All she wanted to do was find him and hug him. That would have to wait, sadly. He had to go home sooner than he thought. Summer sighed, wishing she'd gotten to say goodbye. At least, it seemed, he wouldn't be away too long. She'd also missed saying goodbye to Conner. But she did manage a smile when she read his
email.
When she closed her laptop, the framed photo of herself and Marissa came into view. She quickly removed it from her desk, opting to hide it in a drawer instead. It was easier to run away from it. Run away from everything back home. Run away from the guilt.
Instead, she took Pancakes out of her cage, snuggling her. "Looks like Chris took good care of you."
Pancakes twitched her nose in response. At least some things didn't change.
