I know we see very little of Matt in canon, but did you miss the character profile that was put out for him in Volume 13 of "Death Note: How to Read"? I know it is in Japanese, but all of the translated information is cited on the internet. The easiest way to show you is wikipedia. Matt's profile is here. Since you mention of Matt as being "third in line for L" and of British origin, I can assume you are at least aware of the existence of "How to Read", but maybe you have not read it in the entirety? Even without reading it directly, the summary of How to Read clashes with your characterization.
According to How to Read, Matt enjoys video games and isn't outgoing.
You're playing him extremely social and outgoing- he has roommates, he goes on dates, etc. During the series, much of what we see of Matt is a shut-in, outside only when it seems to be part of his plans with Mello. Maybe coming to Desai has liberated him from this kinda of life, but his behavior doesn't seem at all in line with what character traits of Matt we were shown. Being outgoing isn't limited to only "going out" but includes interacting with other people, something your Matt does a lot of. What is your reason for this sudden change of character?
I understand you want to show Matt as being originally from England. But having him say "mate", and talk about the queen constantly is distracting and unnecessary. When did Matt make any reference to this in the series? Mello is Eastern European, would we expect him to sit around all day telling jokes about Soviet Russia? I know Whammy's House is located in England as well, but no one else from the orphanage uses Briticisms or references the royal family during the series (Near, Mello, L, etc). Why are you making the choice to do so now?
Are there specific reasons for any of these behaviors? I am interested in picking up Mello for desai, so I am concerned how other Death Note characters are played. Matt, of course, would be a large part of Mello's canon connections in the RP.
Thank you for your questions, though I don’t feel I have to explain why I play him the way I do, I’ll do my best to help you understand. Though I also have to point out, we already have a Mello, but he isn’t very active so I see why you’d say you were interested.
I know that Matt’s canon is barely existent, and I have seen his information in How to read, the first thing about this Matt is that you have to be informed that he’s sixteen. Much younger than when he was brought in to the series, even for what little time he was there. We know nothing what so ever about his life in Wammy’s or do we know exactly why he was a shut in and not very outgoing. There is a stereotype of gamers that say they’re not very social, and I can understand that during the Kira case he would be shut in a lot because of two things; working aka spying for Mello, and the general idea of being seen in anyway by Kira, aka video cameras. I would go even further in guessing the reason he wasn’t very outgoing would be the setting he was placed in, the few times we saw him talk, one occasion he mentioned how cute Misa was showing he had interest in the other sex, and the other he made a comment that bordered excitement about going to Japan. Matt is human, humans change, we had little to no development in his character because of his minor role, so though we have to look at what we do know, we also have creative license to develop him the way we see fit.
When I first brought him to Desai he was slightly quiet and talked about video games and so such, in meeting Claire and a small band of people, he realized people actually wanted to talk to him. Knowing he had people like that, allowed him to open up more. As you see in the progression of the entries, he’s slowly started to talk more, and be friendlier to people. This is a totally different environment, and as he’s stated before, you only have one life to live, live it to the full extent. There is no way L’s death hadn’t affected him at all, but he’s from a year or two after that time, before meeting back up with Mello. He hasn’t been touched by a lot of the hardships that were to come, like Mello’s explosion, and Kira nearly taking over the world. Right now, Matt gets to be a normal everyday kid, he’s meeting people from video games and TV shows which happen to be opening him up even more, since he was already familiar with them.
Now to touch on the other things you asked me; the way I see it, the detectives at Wammy’s decided that it would be better to kill any accent that could trace them back to their origins. The original reason they don’t refer to English traits or speak with a British accent. Coming to Desai, Matt decided after a while that he wanted a change, he was bored with talking the way he was, and he wanted to try his hand at his own original accent. He was in a totally different place, where no one knew him, and why not? He couldn’t do it back home, so he felt like it. Found out it was pretty comfortable, reminded him of home, and kept it. I know most people don’t play him like that, or any of them like that, but I didn’t want to be like everyone else. I don’t feel I have to be exactly like everyone else, that isn’t what role playing is about. Conforming to what everyone else assumes is exactly canon, would be no fun. Matt is from England, so he’d be exposed to it.
He’s only referred to the Queen on maybe two occasions, so I’m not sure what you’re talking about with that, but yeah I could cut down on the mate bit. Maybe if someone I play with all the time had told me it was distracting, I would have stopped sooner, but people seem fine with the way he talks, so I don’t see the problem. Maybe it’s because you haven’t been exposed to him that it distracts you? Other British characters here often use that word and others that he has been using, so I don’t see a problem. But I will take what you said in to consideration, thank you.
If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to ask me. I wouldn't mind answering them! Thank you again for your input.
Oh, okay. Since you're bringing him in from age 16, then nevermind! fjhds Obviously all of Matt I know is the person actually within the series, age 19, but since you have chosen to forgo that, you can give him whatever personality you like. I just assumed you were taking him from the end of the canon since it's a completed series and all (and he dies! completed character) But since you're taking him prior to his appearance, you're just running with the back-story and an alternate future. fhjkds That answers a lot of questions already.
Thanks for answering my questions! Hope you get an active Mello eventually..
Sorry for the confusion! Yeah, I didn't want to be like everyone else, and I didn't want the angst of near death weighing him down. I just wanted to play Matt and I enjoy what little bit we know about him, but I wanted to try to take him from earlier to see him before he had all the trauma hit him.
No worries! I always welcome questions, and I would love for Mello to be active. The slight angst of Mello just leaving him at the Orphanage is still very strong in his heart, and I'm dying to play that out. I'm only sad ours isn't active, maybe if they drop if you still feel you want to play, you could come apply? I'd like that very much, so thank you again for your questions!
I'm totally releasing the reserve for you ♥. I'm a nice person, you'll learn that soon enough if you play here! I can't wait to talk to and see your UK!
