I like this meme!
1. His hands are shaking, uselessly, helplessly, and he hides them deep in his pockets before Gerard can see.
2. There had never been light here, of any kind, ever.
3. It didn't hurt.

17. Sometimes, he thought, this whole galaxy had it in for them.
18. In the forest, in the thickest tangles of briar and thorn, the shadows were legion.

20. The wind was bitingly cold against his face, but the hungry chill of the winter was at last retreating.

From 11 different fandoms (Geez, Yuletide sure encourages diversity). Is there a pattern? I can't really tell. Maybe a predilection for prepositional phrases. I think I like to try to set the scene with the first sentence, if I can, so they tend to be longish. Except when they aren't.
