I like this meme!

1.   His hands are shaking, uselessly, helplessly, and he hides them deep in his pockets before Gerard can see.

2.  There had never been light here, of any kind, ever.

3.  It didn't hurt.

4.  The uniform was a tool, as much as anything else.

5.  He had dreamt he was drowning - not a dream to take lightly, not in that house, even if wizards could afford to dismiss their dreams at all.

6.  The university labs were nearly deserted this time of night, just the way Rodney liked them - free of idiots taking up space at his terminals.

7.  The Carter-O'Neill Expeditionary Force found the ruins high in the mountains, half a world away from the star-port and not even close to the location tentatively marked out on Elizabeth's map.

8.  If he closed his eyes (and maybe covered his ears) he could almost think he was back in that little hole-in-the-wall bar in Galveston, the one with the tiny basement windows rusted wide open, and the low-hanging ceiling fans that only worked for a few seconds, and only if you gave the blades a push.

9.  The trees were heavy with cicadas.

10.  The Dracs kept shooting, even as the van screeched down the empty street, tires smoking.

11.  "No, that's supposed to be a goat."

12.  Sometimes, when the sun sank low against the edges of the water and turned the blue to blood and fire, he could believe that the world had finished ending.

13.  Alice, in his head, was color.

14.  "Easy," he muttered, "easy, easy."

15.  The stars dipped and swirled in a crazy dance outside the view port, as the breach in the ship's midsection vented air and debris into space and sent the ship into spasms.

16.  "Tell me again why we can't just wait for Lorne and his team to come get us?"

17.  Sometimes, he thought, this whole galaxy had it in for them.

18.  In the forest, in the thickest tangles of briar and thorn, the shadows were legion.

19.  In the moonlight, even the flowers looked like bone.

20.  The wind was bitingly cold against his face, but the hungry chill of the winter was at last retreating.

21.  It never really rained in Atlantis.

From 11 different fandoms (Geez, Yuletide sure encourages diversity).  Is there a pattern?  I can't really tell.  Maybe a predilection for prepositional phrases.  I think I like to try to set the scene with the first sentence, if I can, so they tend to be longish.  Except when they aren't.
