#42 Blueberry Hill, Sunday

Jan 25, 2009 16:32

Today was Piper's birthday, and she meant it when she said she wasn't going to make a big deal out of it. But it was her day, so she wasn't going to do any work today. No looking over paperwork for the restaurant, no cooking, no cleaning. She was just going to relax and try very hard not to think about anything distressing ( Read more... )

It was entirely possible Lindsey was making a mistake here. It was entirely possible that Piper had no interest in seeing her deadbeat ex-boyfriend at her door on her birthday. It was entirely possible she was going to find it creepy or something that he'd remembered her birthday. It was entirely possible that she was going to blow him up.

And yet here Lindsey was, outside Piper's place, hesitating with his fist a few inches from the door for a long time before knocking. He did knock eventually. And then took two quick steps back so he could flee if necessary.

Maybe he should have just called. Sent a card. Or an email.

Piper went over to answer the door, not really expecting anyone else. She blinked for a moment when she opened the door. "Lindsey? You're at my house..."

She didn't say it like it was a bad thing. She was just really surprised.

Lindsey quickly backed up another step.

"I am. I just...uh...I was...I can go."

"No, you don't have to go," Piper said quickly. She didn't actually want him to. "But, um, what are you doing here?"

Lindsey was tempted to answer that he was 'looking like an idiot, what does it look like?' but he resisted the urge.

"Uh. I thought I'd say happy birthday?"

You'd think hotshot lawyers would be better with words.

"You remembered?" Piper couldn't help smiling at that.

"Yeah. I'm a lawyer. I'm good with remembering dates." The inexplicable defensive tone was...inexplicable.

"Oh, right," Piper said, a little confused by his tone, but she didn't say anything about it. "It's good to see you outside of the restaurant."

"You too. I mean. Uh. I probably should have just called."

"It's okay. You're here now, so you might as well come in," Piper said, stepping aside to let him by her if he wanted.

That was not a panicked expression on Lindsey's face, really. Just because he hadn't thought this through at all...

"Uh...ok. If you want." Those were very hesitant steps he was taking towards the door.

"We could just sit out here if you'd rather," Piper said.

"No. I mean, it's just," Lindsey said, then stopped, shaking his head. "This is weird."

"Maybe a little," Piper agreed. "But maybe it doesn't have to stay that way forever..."

"How long have I been here now?" Lindsey asked. "Still hasn't gotten much less weird. Though I think the threat of being tasered has gone down. A little."

Piper laughed. "I think Veronica has been too busy with wedding planning."
