Last Thursday I joined the Y. The classes are free with membership, and b/c I work for [Institution], I get a discount. Also, I can have my fees deducted straight from my salary, which means I never have to see the money.
Of course, this also means that I am now driven to actually USE the Y, so last week, I tried a yoga class. It was nice--I could do most of the moves--but it was a little bit ... woo-woo for my taste. (Personally, I find it rather offensive to bow one's head and say "Namaste" at the end. Appropriation much?)
Yesterday, I decided to try Pilates. I enjoyed it...once the pain subsided. Actually,it wasn't that bad. I was able to do most of the moves, with a few exceptions, most of which have more to do with my general lack of flexibility. Though there was one (involved holding one's self up by the heels and hands, with hands behind your back) that I had to give up on. The pain in my wrists was so intense that I thought I'd break something. Today, I'm sore, but in a good stretchy way, and not in a wretched way. (Hate those mirrors, though. The outfit I was wearing + gravity when facing the floor + wall-to-wall mirrors = horrified Snark gazing at ugly saggy tummy. It looks fine when gravity's not pulling on me from that direction!)
Today, I went swimming.
If I was sore today before swimming, I now feel like I've been wrung out. Harshly. And tomorrow will probably be omgnightmarepain. OTOH, the thing I like about membership is that I can go and use the pool for 20 minutes, which is plenty of swimming for me at the moment, and I don't feel like I've wasted my money, which I often feel when I've paid, say, $4 to use the pool for 20 minutes.
I plan to go back to pilates, but I think I'm going to try taping my wrists next time. It might offer a teensy bit of extra support. The instructor also gave me a few different moves to try that might take the pressure off my puny, congenitally weak little wrists until I build up some strength.
Anyway. We'll see how long my interest lasts. I'm hoping that my cheapness will override my laziness here, and get me exercising. I have been going straight from work, which is good b/c 1) the Y is closer to work than home, and 2) I don't have time to go home and go, "Naaah. Too tired."
