"Hey Lois! What's lookin' good today?" Lieutenant Cory Finkbiener called out as he entered the bakery. Let's Get Baked was his favorite shop in the city, partly because of their delectable maple doughnuts with coconut frosting and partly because of the 10% discount for police officers.
"Oh, you know the answer to that, lieutenant!" Lois replied as she handed a customer their change. "Me!"
They both laughed, as did many of the other patrons. Cory and Lois had known each other for more years than either cared to admit. They'd met at an after school class for their kids back when her Bobby and his Kevin were still in the third grade; both were now pursuing graduate degrees. Cory and Lois often wondered to each other how in the hell they were old enough to have adults for kids.
Neither Bobby nor Kevin had been particularly interested long-term in archeology (the subject of the after-school class), but Cory and Lois made up for the kids' lack of interest with their own enthusiasm. Through the years, they'd molded their interest into a good-natured, on-going game. They each loved to try and stump the other with some new bit of trivia, or to be the first to get the low-down on an exciting excavation going on somewhere in the world. When news broke that the first-ever complete skeleton of a particularly rare dinosaur had been found in Mongolia, Lois' tweet appeared mere moments before Cory's.
"No maple coconuts today, Lois?" Cory asked, scanning the shelves a second time. It took a while, as Let's Get Baked never skimped on assortment. Where many shops had just one basic display case, Baked had three, the cases forming a 'U' of deliciousness around the customers.
"Nope, sorry -- those sold *fast* today. I think they were gone by noon, maybe even earlier," she replied. "But, hey -- I did make a special treat just for you today. See if you can find it." The twinkle in her eye was fully present in her voice as well.
"Why am I suddenly scared," he laughed, but turned to the cases with new enthusiasm. He hadn't really paid any attention to the labels other than mentally checking off the 'No' column as his brain repeatedly asked Does this tray hold maple doughnuts with coconut frosting...
Cory looked closer at the display cases. Trays of scones, muffins, pastries, doughnuts -- all neatly aligned and with hand-written labels. True to the well-known reputation of Let's Get Baked, most of the trays were nearly empty this late in the day.
Longjohns, vanilla creme filling
Longjohns, lemon filling
Glazed old fashioned sour cream
Pumpkin spice
He turned the corner and began looking through the second case.
Cinnamon muffins
Oatmeal raisin muffins
Apple turnover
Cherry turnover
Cop Roll
Cop Roll (lite)
Cory did a double-take on the last two. The two sets of Cop Rolls were both sort of mis-shaped mounds of doughnut-y material, as if the baker had suddenly gotten tired and just plopped the remaining scoops of dough into the fryer without bothering to shape them into actual doughnuts. The 'lite' rolls were plain, without any extras, while the full version had both frosting and multi-colored sprinkles.
"Oh no, you didn't," he said as he began to laugh. Her satisfied look and wide smile told him that yes, she most certainly had. He motioned for a Cop Roll (lite), and Lois handed one over the top of the case. Cory looked turned it around in his hand a couple times, shaking his head, and then took a tentative bite. Oh Lois, you lovely girl, he thought -- it was a maple doughnut with the coconut mixed right in.
"Well, I have to say it, Lois," he said after a few more bites had made their way into his system.
"This is the best shit I've ever tasted."
This is my entry for the third week of Season 8 of
therealljidol. The prompt this week was 'coprolite'. As always, thanks for reading.
