Happy Pedant's Saint Patrick's Day

Mar 15, 2008 07:53

Are you wearing green today? Normally Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17, but when that falls during Holy Week the church moves the celebration to another day. The last time that this happened was in 1940, when Saint Patrick's Day was moved to April 3.

I'm going to wear green again on Monday anyway, just to avoid getting pinched.

Ah, that explains why the Leprechaun was at the school on Friday. The kids kept saying that "Patrick's Day" was Friday, but I kept telling them that no it was Monday.

I guess that's better than dragging them all in on a Saturday for the celebration. Is it a Catholic school?

LOL. :) No, just a regular public school.

So were these people on the ball and aware of the change or just mistaken? I figured it was pretty nerdy of me to know this.

No, actually when I googled it, the first site listed was a teacher site, so it was probably on a calendar for teachers or something like that. So, if a teacher normally does something for St. P's day, they might have been looking something up, or had a calendar and had a heads up that it was going to be on the 15th.

As for Easter, obviously, it's almost the earliest it could possibly be. When you posted how St. P's day fell in the Holy Week, I thought about Easter being "first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox" and trying to figure out when that would be. They're really rushing it this year! ;p

I checked out the teacher site, and it had some interesting links. I learned some stuff. :)

And, it really took me by surprise that Easter is next week, too! Especially since Outlook is obviously screwey since it doesn't list it as a Holiday. :/

My calendar got Easter correct but Saint Patrick's Day wrong. I guess this is why we should trust our flist for necessary information on upcoming religious festivals. :D
