Smallville Luthor ficlet: The Sin that Lieth at the Door

I don't know what to say about this one. It's disjointed and odd and on the terrible side, but I wrote it and thus feel compelled to post it, because I almost never finish the fics I start writing, even the short ones. So yeah. Have this weird little fic about AU Clark from "Luthor."

The Sin that Lieth at the Door
<684 words>

He delights in referring to his sons as Cain and Abel, his laugh dripping poison as the two boys shift uncomfortably and eye one another.

If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted?

He meets her at age 14, as he wandered absently through the faceless socialites attending a charity function his father puts on like a play. She wears sneakers under her elegant dress.

“I’m Lois,” she said, sticking out her hand with all the subtlety and power of a gunshot. He clasps it slowly. “Clark.”

And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.

His mother cries out-she cries out before the shot, cries out to see him writhing under the sick light of the rock on the floor-and as she rushes forward the gun cracks in Lex’s hand.

And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

He sends Lois a letter before he goes to spend that best summer of his life the family’s ranch-a concession to his mother- outside Coast City, not far from where her father is stationed, and she climbs into his window on the third night and kisses him with all the subtlety and power of a gunshot.

and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth.

She hits the ground hard and her body covers the rock, shielding him in death. His heart burns, his throat burns, his eyes burn and Lex is screaming, clawing at a red hot point on his back he cannot reach.

The room smells like burnt hamburger and is silent.

And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;

MARTHA AND LEX LUTHOR KILLED IN CAR CRASH

They pay for lies.

Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth

“Did you kill him?” she finally asks point blank, with all the subtlety and power of a gunshot.

He’s quiet a moment and holds her one hand in the two of his, molding around it, trying to memorize its shape. He listens to her blood humming in her veins, he can’t stop listening to the blood and he can’t look at her. She tilts his head up with her finger and her thumb and they feel so warm against his clammy face and then his gaze meet hers.

He knows that she can see the answer in his eyes, so the end has already come and gone when he finally whispers, “yes.”

Where is Abel thy brother?

“I need you to take care of something for me, Clark. Someone. I know you don’t want to, son, and I was going to ask Lex but since you-well.“

And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

He pleads for his life, which is new. Clark looks at him with dead eyes, this fat pile of grease and greed. The neck cracks in his hand, the sound like a gunshot. The blood in the veins slows and slows and he waits until it comes to a stop before he leaves. They are all sinners. It’s alright, it’s alright. He melts into the black night.

Am I my brother's keeper?

“It’s funny Clark, the way dad always would joke that we were his Cain and Abel. We should have realized it was never a joke.”

Lex kicks him again and his gut is burning.

“Looks like it falls to me to be the villain of the story, brother.”

And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

Clark lets Lois leave, his head in his hands, cursing himself for never asking who was Cain and who was Abel.

and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire
