I am a jinx. I know that because if I sit and watch anything where England or someone English is competing in anything, they always lose! So I don't watch live TV matches anymore. Which is a shame as I used to love watching Test cricket. But it's not the same anymore. I used to have the TV on with the sound off and Radio 4 on for the commentary. But all that has passed. The old favourites from the radio are all dead or retired (John Arlott, Brian Johnstone, Freddie Trueman, etc etc) and Channel 4 now televise the match and I may be a snob but I hate the match being interrupted by ads! I actually went to the Oval once to watch a Test match between England and the West Indies. This was when Botham was playing for us and the great Viv Richards batting for Windies. They were invincible in those days and of course, we lost, but the atmosphere in the ground was unforgettable. That had to be 30 odd years ago as I was living in the Nurses Home at Rochford and going up on the old Fenchurch Street line (smelly carriages and endless back gardens - hope it's better now!) Oh dear, I'm sounding a right old fogey! A good win from England today after the shambles of the last match. It's great to have the Ashes back yet again. Something to celebrate as well before we get overrun with football - a game I hate with a passion!!!!
