Dream effects: Mostly horror for a good portion of the dream. There's a little bit of loving warmth in there, and then the ending... Kind of speaks for itself.
Warnings: Gore throughout, but there’s a picture at the end that is very bloody.
Note: Backdated to just before the event.
“…. I’m sorry.”
One of Eliot’s eyebrows rose up as he looked back at Gilbert, who was lying on his bed, sporting bandages around his neck and still recovering from forming his contract with Raven.
“You’re the rightful successor. I…”
… Damnit, not this again.
“Are you kidding?” Eliot got up from sitting on the bed, heading toward the door, ignoring Gilbert’s confused look.
“Even without Raven’s power, I will support this family in my own way! That’s why you too have to carry out your job as a member of the Nightray Family,” Eliot looked back over his shoulder at Gilbert. “As Raven’s contractor, and as my older brother!”
Eliot just barely caught a glimpse of the look of shock on Gilbert’s face when he called him that…
“Eliot!!” His gaze snapped straight back to the door as he heard the panicky voice call through it. “Eliot, are you in there?!”
Eliot reached out to open the door… Surprised to find his sister behind it, looking pale, almost as if she was in shock. “
Vanessa?”
“…. Elly. Your brother Fred--” He stared at her, as she opened her mouth, unable to keep speaking. A tear dripped down her face. “--has been killed.
Eliot stopped breathing, eyes widening in horror. “Someone… Cut off his head…”
--------------------------------------------------------------
… Eliot had barely even blinked, and suddenly Vanessa was no longer in front of him. Instead, his older brother, Ernest, was
reaching out to pat his head, with his other brother Claude standing close behind him.
“Elly.” Ernest was smiling, moving his hand to his younger brother’s cheek and trying to sound reassuring. “Take our mother and run.”
“Ernest…?” He HATED that his voice sounded so small… Damnit, why couldn’t he move?!
“We will definitely get rid of the headhunter.” Ernest gave him one last smile, before turning to leave.
“Yes…” Claude turned to go too. Eliot could see both of them walking away, staring at their backs. “Even at the cost of our own lives.”
A sickening wave of fear rose from Eliot’s stomach up to his throat, clenching in his chest.
“Claude…”No… “Please, WAIT!” You can’t…
His voice stopped working, and all he could do was stare in horror as he knew he was watching them disappear from his life.
If you die… It will be all over--!
There was a brief flash of blood, a sickening splat, a loud thud, and finally, a piercing scream…
--------------------------------------------------------------
… and once again, just a blink and Eliot was seeing his sister again… All up until she pulled her hand back and slapped him as hard as she could.
“Don’t you realize you’re the only one I have left?!” She was flushed as tears started to run down her face. “Fred, Claude, and Ernest… The headhunter killed them all! Because of that, our mother lost her mind and fell prey to the lies of that foreigner!”
“And our father still pretends not to notice what’s going on!” Vanessa brought her balled up fists to her face, sobbing. “What would I do if I lost you too--?!”
She was cut off as Eliot reached an arm around her, placing his hand on the back of her head and pulling her close as she cried. He felt… Well, slightly awkward this way… But she was his sister. He didn’t mean to make her feel this way.
“… I’m sorry. I’m really sorry Vanessa…But still… I want to catch the Headhunter no matter what. That’s why I came here today” He looked off to the side, not wanting to watch his sister crying. “I wanted to discover the connection between that man and the Headhunter. I didn’t want to leave it all to Pandora.”
Vanessa’s voice was muffled by his shoulder, but he could still hear her. “…To defend the honor of the Nightrays?
“Of course!” He yelled sharply, but sarcastically, as if they both would know he wasn’t doing it because of pride. He finally looked back at her, frowning for a second before putting a hand on top of her head. “Look, don’t cry. You should try to cheer up a bit.”
“Next week is mother’s birthday! We should celebrate even more splendidly then usual… Since we also have to celebrate on behalf of our brothers.” He smiled broadly, really trying hard to cheer her up.. “I composed a really special song this year. I’m sure mom will love it! It’s called ‘Lacie’… it came to me in a flash of inspiration!”
Vanessa still had tears in her eyes. “… You’re lying. In your letters, you complained of not being able to come up with anything decent.
“You’re the one who’s lying!” Eliot cried… But then Vanessa looked down, like she was about to start crying hard again.
“… Don’t worry. He
reached his hands up to the sides of her head, and leaned forward to touch his forehead to Vanessa’s. “I won’t die that easily like that. Okay, Sis?”
….. And everything went black.
--------------------------------------------------------------
When Eliot came to, he found himself lying on the floor.
Did I faint…?
… He could see his sister's legs. She was standing right next to him. Eliot pushed himself up onto his knees, “Sorry about that Vanessa. I’m all right now…”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eliot was already screaming before he even woke up. His voice cut off with a shudder as he was left gasping for breath. The blankets had been completely thrown off of his bed as he curled up on his side, holding on to the bedspread in a death grip.
For a moment, he couldn't even remember why he was screaming. He stared at his bedroom wall, damning himself for shaking so much, but it just got worse as the dream came back to him. His eyes widened as a growing sense of horrific realization came over him...
Vanessa...
Eliot brought a hand up to his mouth, feeling like he was going to be sick. He already had seen his brothers die many times. He had been slowly learning to deal with their deaths but... Never her. Not Vanessa! That never happened! ... As much as he wanted to convince himself it was just a dream, he still remembered exactly what it felt like when his sister's blood splattered onto his face.
His throat was burning and his vision got blurry. He was trying so hard to control himself, but when he blinked, he realized that he was in tears... God damnit, it wasn't real! It was just a dream, so why the hell was he reacting like this?!
... Why did it feel like like Vanessa was really dead?!
