Oh, I really like this look into Severus' past and all the people in it, and it "reads" in a cinematic way through my mind because of your plot-grounding use of description. As well, I think you give a lot of detail in a sparing way that doesn't feel sparse, and I respect that a lot. Thank you for sharing. :D

The gradual seduction and finally the end ... marked by the Dark Lord and doomed.

Glad you pinch hit because this was a great and plausible look at how it all could have happened. Nicely done. It was nice to see Severus with his friends in a non DE setting. Well... I mean not killing and torturing.

It was nice to see Severus with his friends, being as normal as he could, and giving in to the seduction of the Dark Lord. And I mean see. I could see it in my head through the beautiful words you wove.

Ah, thank you! It's nice to hear you liked the style - I know I can overdo it with the descriptions.

Thanks again for reading.

Oooh, this is a vividly written and perceptive indictment of Severus as a teenager, a callous and self-absorbed young man, intelligent but too inexperienced to be able to stand outside events and see the circle of hell they're leading to. At this stage of his life, his ambitions - for power, revenge, erotic camaraderie and the chance to hobnob with those 'above his station' - overrule his common sense and overthrow his reason. I love your opening lines because they establish with nice economy that Severus knows the sounds of infant creatures in pain and finds them merely irritating. It disturbs him only because it interrupts him, hinting at his indifference to those weaker than he is - plus you let us glimpse both his hunger for knowledge and his self-centered impatience ( ... )

Ultimately we reach the moment He tries to think of another option and can only draw a blank, and they have him. Then you end on that clever, masterful Yours, Severus, which is the stark truth and the moment his fatal error closes around his neck like a noose. He belongs to them now.

I'm seriously impressed that you pulled together something as shrewd and carefully layered as this for a pinch hit, MA. It's so full of interesting detail and unsentimental observation about Severus' darker, crueler side, his blind spots and singlemindedness, but it also contains moments of beauty. It's rare for stories to focus on young Snape at his worst, smugly convinced he's in control of his fate when in fact he's just stepped off the edge of a chasm. I found it fascinating and compelling, and I look forward to reading more of your work.

(Sorry this went on so bloody long, but I figure it's better to leave a rambling comment than no comment at all.)

Don’t apologise for the length! It’s very heartening to see, especially when you highlighted so many little details I was hoping the reader would pick up on. Some of your most memorable descriptions circle around Lucius feels almost like a call out (I do enjoy waxing poetic about the bastard), but it’s nice to hear you liked the writing style.

I’m also glad you enjoyed the fact that this focused on Severus at his worst - Snape embracing his dark side as a young adult is one of my favourite things to explore, but there’s never much of a reason to look at it with most festfic, so when I saw category two needed a pinch hit I couldn’t resist.

Thank you so much for reading and leave such a lovely comment!
