Oh, Severus, you really do deserve that drink.

My favorite thing about this story is Severus' memory of going to the zoo with his mum; it feels so real to me-but then, so does every word of this piece. I can well imagine all of Severus' remembrances as you present them perfectly within the framing moment of his birthday.

There's really nothing like a birthday to mark time, slow you down, and dredge up old memories.`

I can so easily see how a happy party at Lily's place would actually make him feel worse... and Albus? He can can it. I'm glad that Minerva remembered, even if they can't be close, and GAH! That last line.

Tired, indeed.

This is bittersweet and sad and beautiful in its simplicity!

Oh,my heart. Severus recalling his memories was bittersweet. I like how you set the scene with the former headmasters speaking about him while he sat there with his drink and thoughts.

Belated thanks...

MyWitch's pic just made me think of the Headmaster's office and it flowed from there... at that point, Severus has no friends and only enemies, so the portraits are a small comfort for a man who has none!
