I. Severus
Severus is four and a half when he teaches himself to read.
Severus is seven when he discovers his mother's potion book and her wand hidden in an old trunk.
From then on, until he receives his Hogwarts letter, Severus's nights are spent discovering secrets as he reads and experiments under his blanket.
As a grown-up wizard, Severus does not dwell on his childhood memories much but occasionally he wonders how his mother missed the odd burned spot in his blanket cover. He supposes she had too many other problems at the time to notice what her son was up to.
II. The Ministry
Ever so often the Ministry receives an alarm of illicit magical activities by a minor in Cokeworth but, whenever they send an owl to check this out, all it finds is a grown witch having a smoke in front of her house.
The Minister went to school with the witch, and although they weren't friends or in the same House, he occasionally thinks what a pity it is that she wasted her talent on becoming a Muggle housewife, who needs to sneak out to have a smoke when her worthless husband is either asleep or passed out from drinking.
III. Eileen
Eileen inhales deeply and softly blows out the smoke.
She knows she cannot protect her boy from her husband's wrath when he is in a bad mood but she will be damned if she lets the Ministry interrupt him on his path to become the greatest potioneer of his generation because of their silly rules.
She blows out more smoke and focuses on her purpose. Wandless magic is a joyous kind of magic, she thinks, as she watches the smoke rise, expand and form a protective layer around the house.
