“Lily, will you not leave this fool? He is unworthy of you,” Severus Snape entreated.
“And you are, Severus?”
“By no means, but the difference is that I know this! He thinks that he is! Look at where he brings you, a shabby little house in a place whose only distinction is the dead that were born here long ago. I shall place you above mortal queens; with me you can assume your rightful place in this world!”
“And how will you do this, Severus? Are you wealthy? Half a Prince you may be, but you are no king, to set me on a throne. What more do I need than that which I have? My home, a husband who loves me, a ma-”
“I love you! I loved you before this self-important popinjay ever laid eyes on you, Lily, and you know it.”
“I do know it, and there was a time when I might have returned your love, Severus, but that time is forever past. What your fervor prevented me from saying is that I have a man who is his own man. One who serves no master but his own heart, and mine. Who is your master, Severus? Whom do you serve?”
Her eyes fell on his left forearm, and he knew his last hope was gone.
“This world is changing rapidly. There will be death on one side and power on the other. I meant to protect you. For you, Lily, I did it for you.”
