Always

Snape stood glaring at Dumbledore, who looked back at him quiet calmly. A million images flashed through his mind, all those times he had saved Potter's neck. The quidditch match with quirell, Lupin in werewolf form, warning the order when Potter didn't return from the forest in fifth year. All of the effort he had put into keeping that blasted boy alive seemed pointless because of what Dumbledore had just said.

"I have spied for you, lied for you, put myself in mortal danger for you! All of it was to keep Lily Potter's son safe! And now you tell me you have been raising him like a pig for slaughter!" Severus fell back into his seat, his anger now spent, to be replaced with terrible pain and guilt. He had spent the last seven years protecting Lily's son, trying his best to keep him safe. Now the boy had an ax over his head, an ax he was oblivious to, and of which Severus himself had been blind to until it was to late.

"We had to let him grow, let him test his strength." Dumbledore said softly, but power rung behind his words. "And you must not tell him before the time is right Severus. Otherwise, Harry may not have the strength to do what must be done." Severus shook his head back and forth, as if in denial any of this was true. "I kept him safe for her all these years, for Lily." his hands trembled slightly.

"Is this remorse Severus?" Dumbledore asked him softly, but the blue eyes were burning with inquiry. Severus met Dumbledore's eyes, blue and obsidian, and let the headmaster rush through his thoughts and memories, experiencing all the pain and regret. "I wish..I wish I were dead." he heard himself say, and finally he broke, putting his head in his hands and beggining to cry.

He thought about Lily. The first time he saw her on the playground when they had been kids, playing with her muggle sister. He had thought she was the most beautiful being he had ever seen, especiially when she had gone soaring through the air after jumping from the playground swing, landing on her feet without a scratch. Severus then realizing she was a witch, and that he could have someone who might understand him.

All of those years before Hogwarts, just talking to her and learning about her. She had known about the abuse and neglect at his home, and yet she had not abandoned him. She had accepted him for who he was, despite his mismatched clothes, pale skin, and crooked nose.

And then there had been all of his Hogwarts years, the only thing good in them had been Lily. The walks, talks, picnics by the lake, seeing her eyes sparkle with curiousity in potions classes, seeing her eyes light up whenever she had seen him walking down the corridor.

And then she had died, and it had been his fault. He had joined the side of light, turning his back and Voldemort and becoming Dumbledore's spy. He became potions master at Hogwarts, but even that couldn't take away the overwhelming guilt and pain he felt.

And then her son had come to Hogwarts, and Severus had hated him as he grew older year by year, mostly because he looked more like James than Lily. The other reason was that everytime he had looked at Potter, he was forced to relive the thought of Lily's sacrifice, was forced to look into those familar green eyes which he had once loved.

And now Harry Potter's days were close to over. His life had been determined for him the moment he had recieved his famous scar, becoming the boy who lived, and was forever forced to bear the burden that name gave him.

And now he had to give up his life to bring Voldemort down. Severus knew Potteer would not run away from his death. Perhaps he would even embrace it, beieng the Griffindor he was. He was already well aqauinted with death after all, but Severus couldn't help but feel a little bit of pity for the boy who's whole life had been determined by a prophecy and a madman.

Dumbledore noticed his thoughts. "Have you grown to care for the boy after all, Severus?" he asked. Severus was shocked out of his thoughts by the question. "For him!? EXPECTO PATRONUM!" and from his wand burst the silver doe, who lifted her beautiful head and looked at him with her silver eyes while she filled the room with warmth and light.

Lily's patronus had been a doe. He had loved her for nearly all his life, and then because of one horrible mistake he had lost her, but he had never stopped loving her. He had loved no one but her, and because of this his patronus was a doe also. The warmth the patronus gave off melted some of the coldness and guilt that had lodged itself in Snape's heart, and even when the patronus dissapeared he still felt her warmth, working through a heart that had been frozen and mauled by pain, heartbrake, and guilt.

"After all this time?" Severus heard Dumbledore said, and he met Dumbledore's eyes before he looked out the window, towards the Forbidden Forest. There, right in between two trees and partly obscured by the shadows was a doe. As his eyes focused on it, the doe seemed to study him with her eyes in a thoughtful manner. Black eyes against green, and Severus felt a sense of security while the doe studied him. It was only a minute, and then the doe backed away into the trees, allowing the forest to consume her. Severus felt the warmth flare in his heart, easing the loniness and pain.

"Always." he whispered.
