Our Roots Define Us
Part Five
Lily and Nadia followed the lady and the little girl down to the kitchen, where adult Lily plopped Nadia down on a chair next to the kitchen counter. A loud crack suddenly filled the room, a house elf seeming to appear out of nowhere. If Lily and Nadia hadn't been used to the sounds of house elves apparating, they would have been horribly startled.
"Can Sparkle get you something, mistress?" The house elf said in a shrill voice, her eyes sparkling so much that her name seemed very appropriate. She was dressed quite nicely for a house elf, a white linen cloth wrapping around like a toga, a pair of white socks adorned her feet. The adult Lily's smile was kind when she regarded the elf, and Sparkle seemed to practically radiate happiness, but so was the nature of house elves, although sparkle seemed better treated than most.
"Yes actually, Sparkle. Would you mind entertaining our little goofball over there while I get some ice cream?" "ICE CWEAM!" the little blonde girl said enthusiastically, bouncing up and down on her seat for emphasis, which made both Lily and the elf smile.
"Of course, mistress. Sparkle will keep young mistress well entertained." Sparkle bowed, then snapped her fingers in Nadia's direction. Instantly, several fairies seemed to appear out of nowhere, floating dreamily over Nadia, who's eyes widened in suprise, then her mouth split into a wide smile. "Pretty lights!" Nadia shreiked with delight, trying to make a grab at the fairies, who of course avoided her capture. "Pretty! Pretty!" Nadia repeated, determined to catch atleast one of the mischevious creatures.
"Thank you, Sparkle." Lily smiled, placing the bowl of ice cream in front of Nadia, who was still entirely focused upon the fairies. "Thank you Spark!" Nadia giggled, looking at the house elf with clear delight on her face. Sparkle glowed under the thanks she received, "You are most welcome, young mistress." Sparkle bowed to each of them, then disaperated with a sharp "Crack!"
Nadia clapped her hands excitedly when Sparkle disapeared, but her attention was soon entirely diverted elsewhere. "ICE CWEAM!" she bellowed, and was soon diving in with much enthusiasm, smearing it all over her face in her hurry. The adult Lily was far to amused to even say anything, though she kept a washcloth within reach. "You just might need a bath later, missy!" Lily said in a mock stern tone, but Nadia of course thought she was serious. "NO BAF!" she said sternly right back, as if that was the end of the matter right then and there. Her attempts to avoid a bath however, were diverted when she heard someone come crashing through the kitchen door.
"GARE!" Nadia instantly broke out into a wide, gape toothed smile as a boy, perhaps eleven or so, came flying into the kitchen, covered from head to toe in mud. Nadia reached towards the boy, still shouting, "GARE! GARE! GARE!" "Garrett! Adult Lily Once again used her stern voice, and the muddy boy looked up at her somewhat humbly, as though he was afraid of getting in trouble.
"You know you're not supposed to track mud inside the house! Why are you that muddy anyway?" She raised an eyebrow, and Garrett blushed under her glare. "Um..well..James wanted to have a mudball fight, so we just did." Garrett looked down at the floor, but Lily's next words brought his eyes back up. "I don't mind that you had a mudball fight, Garrett." she said in a soft tone. "What I do mind is you tracking mud in the house. You wouldn't do that at Hogwarts, would you?" Garrett grinned at this, a mischevious smile lighting up his face.
"Of course I wouldn't..well atleast not in front of Filch. James and I do it all the time, and it annoys the bloody hell out of Filch, but he can never prove who did it." "Language Garrett, the last thing we need is Nadia picking up those swear words as well." But they both saw older Lily crack a smile when she learned of Garrett's antics at Hogwarts.
"Yeah, can't have my little sister learning those naughty words to early..you learn those at Hogwarts." Lily gave him a disaproving look, but otherwise held her silence. Or atleast she did until Garrett made a move to pick up Nadia.
"Not so fast!" Lily pointed her wand at Garrett, vanishing the dirt off him with one strong scourgify. "NOW you can pick her up." Lily smiled, then looking at Nadia, she did the same only gentler, to clean the ice cream off her face. "Oh, I see how it is." Garrett began as he picked Nadia up out of her high chair. "So Nadia gets the less painful scourgify, and I get the grandest of all scourgifies. How is that fair?" He grumbled as he swung Nadia around playfully in his arms while she shreiked with suprise and delight. "Because she wasn't the one covered completely in muck." Lily smirked, eyes lightened with humor.
Garrett continued to grumble as Lily went to the window and looked outside, taking in the grey storm clouds and the rain, as well as the occasional boom of thunder. Putting the curtains back in place over the windows, she turned back to Garrett. "I wasn't even aware it was raining..I hope your father comes back soon..He might just be held up at work, but he's usually back by now." Lily walked over to where Garrett was, taking Nadia from him as she finished cleaning up the kitchen quickly.
"Don't worry, mum. I'm sure dads fine. He's probably just busy at the apothocary. You know how high in demand his potions are. It's a good thing he is one of the best potion masters in Europe." Garrett thought about it for a minute. "Actually, he could probably even teach at Hogwarts if he wanted, he's really that good." Lily smiled at Garrett and said simply, "Yes, he very well could, if that were his ambition." She recalled all to well how many times Professor Dumbledore had offered her husband the teaching position, and every time he had refused him. He had always proffered the simple, quieter life of the apothocary, and she could understand that. Eventually the headmaster had found a new potions master to fill the position, so it ceased to be a problem. His name escaped Lily, but she knew that he was said to be the youngest potions master, and Hogwarts teacher, in almost a century.
"I'm going to go get Nadia ready for bed, are you going to be okay on your own?" Lily questioned as she heard a very sleepy Nadia yawn tiredly, and she stroked her hair in a soothing motion. "Yeah, I'll be fine mum. Just make sure that goofball gets to bed asap." Garrett grinned when Nadia replied with a very tired, "Not a goof, Gare!" Lily rolled her eyes as she hugged Garrett, which he tried to dodge, then took Nadia up the grand staircase, Lily and Nadia following behind her silently. Lily felt a hand slip into hers, and she looked at Nadia in a understanding way. "It's hard isn't it?" Lily softly said, and Nadia nodded silently, not trusting her voice. Deciding she had to be the strength now, Lily pulled Nadia forward, squeezing her hand tightly as they continued, knowing they had to no matter what.
*****
Nadia's room was everything you would imagine a little girls room to be, and possibly more. The walls were pink, pictures very similar to the ones on the fireplace adorned the walls around the room. Pictures of fairies, sprites, witches, a mermaids greeted them as they entered the room, which was shaped like a circle. A chest of toys were in one spot, though many toys lay scattered about. There was a closet filled to capacity opposite the bed, and a bookshelf with story books directly beside the bed.
And then there was the bed itself. It was pink of course, fluffy and inviting, looking as if it was built for a princess. You couldn't even see the pillows, mostly because that part of the bed was covered in stuffed animals mixed with magical creatures. The bed was enclosed by a enclosure of blue netting that to get to the bed you had to part it like a curtain. It was that bed that adult Lily tucked Nadia into after she had gotten her into a violet colored nightgown.
"Look!" Nadia poked Lily on the arm, pointing at the ceiling. Lily snapped out of watching the scene and her gaze shot up to the ceiling, her breath catching as she did.
The ceiling sent her memory flying back, back to her own room in their island home, to the ceiling of Hogwart's Great Hall. The ceiling was a monument to the stars, bewitched to look like the night sky, just like the great hall and her own room. As they watched, a shooting star flew past, and the cresent moon seemed to emit an almost ethernal glow. The many stars sparkled like diamonds in the inky blue sky, leading a path into the unknown. It was incredible, and with a jolt, Lily realized that there might be another reason why she had made her ceiling the same way, besides it being comforting to her. It was familiar.
"And so, the fairy and the prince became one, so in love were they. They were binded by love, though hate had tried to break them apart. Forced together by fate, connected by greif, spirit, and the deepest of magic. Evil had not been able to break them, and death did not follow them because their love was a sheild against him. And so they lived for a thousand years, together always, until they reached a great age. And it was only then that they dropped the sheild, greeted death as an equal, and departed this life, hand in hand and heart in heart."
Lily closed the story book she had been reading to Nadia, smiling as she took in Nadia's puzzled expression. "But what happened to the fairy, Arena? And the prince?" her voice was pleading. "Did they live together in the afterlife, together always?" Her eyes were practically wide as saucers as she waited. Lily smiled again as she spoke softly, "Yes they did. They lived peacefully together for the rest of eternity." Nadia smiled, snuggling up to her unicorn as closed her eyes. "I want that. I want my prince and to live together forever." her voice drifted off into a sigh, and then her breathing became deep even. Lily stood up and placed the book back onto the shelf, then bent down and pressed a light kiss to Nadia's forehead, brushing her blonde curls away from her face before moving to the door. She paused for a minute there, watching Nadia sleep soundly, then turned, walking out the door and shutting it behind her, Lily and Nadia following in her wake.
