I’m Alive - ELO
I’m alive, and the world shines for me today
I’m alive, suddenly I am here today
Seems like forever (and a day) thought I could never (feel this way)
Is this really me? I’m alive, I’m alive
I’m alive, and the dawn breaks across the sky
I’m alive, and the sun rises up so high
Lost in another world (far away) never another word (‘til today)
But what can I say? I’m alive, I’m alive, I’m alive
Suddenly came the dawn (from the night) suddenly I was born (into light)
How can it be real? I’m alive, I’m alive, I’m alive
I’m alive, and the world shines for me today
I’m alive, suddenly I am here today
Seems like forever (and a day) thought I could never (feel this way)
Is this really me? I’m alive, I’m alive
Remus awoke with a start, the jumbled images in his mind half real memories, half lurid nightmares. He shivered as a breeze through the open window cooled the sweat on his bare chest and in the semi-darkness of predawn reached out a hand to one side only to find empty space and still warm, rumpled sheets.
Stifling the faint surge of panic rising inside him, that logic dictated was simply residual from his nightmare, he kicked away the thick duvet and stumbled across the room, stubbing his toe on the corner of a chest before he found his wand, muttered lumos and threw on a dressing gown.
With the barest of glances into their tiny bathroom, Remus hurried down the twisting staircase and waved his wand towards the oil lamps that shuddered into life, their flickering light illuminating the open plan space with a yellowish hue; of Sirius there was no sign, not even the scattered remnants of a midnight excursion to the pantry as was normal on the mornings Remus woke alone in their bed.
The clock chimed half past the hour and Remus glared at it for reminding him just how ridiculously early it was; half past four could easily be faced after staying up too late drinking firewhiskey and dancing, or at least attempting to dance, to soppy insomniac tunes on the wireless, but was definitely an hour that should never be approached from this side of the day.
Sighing, he lowered his wand and headed to the kitchenette in the corner, pouring a tall glass of cold water and draining half of it in one long mouthful. Setting the drink down, Remus rubbed at his itching eyes, complaining at the lack of sleep last night, and stared unseeing out of the window until a movement caught his gaze and after watching for a few bizarre moments, he hurried out into the tiny back garden.
Sirius stood in the middle of the garden, arms hanging loosely at his sides; face raised towards the sky, clad in only his pyjamas, the bottom few inches soaked through from dew already, his toes muddy and goose-pimples speckled over his bare arms.
The trees ranged along the end of the garden were ghostly grey and dewdrops sparkled in the rising light as Remus moved slowly closer to where Sirius stood and tentatively placed a hand on his shoulder. He was acknowledged with an almost imperceptible nod then his lover went back to staring out across the fields beyond their house, his breathing slow and steady, a strange smile playing over his lips.
Pale clouds flitted across the sky that was now tinged red and gold and the two of them stood in silence as the world slowly filled with colour, the dark violet of the heavens fading through lilacs and settling into a bronzed azure, the melancholy greys and browns draining away to leave a rich palette of greens, oranges and pinks.
With an appreciative sigh, Sirius turned and wrapped his arms around Remus’ waist, resting his head on his shoulder. Pressing a kiss into his damp hair, Remus held him close, feeling the shivers he was trying to suppress from standing barefoot in dew drenched grass for a good half hour.
“That was the first sunrise I’ve seen in over twelve years.”
