“Can you hear the dragons crying?”
Ron didn’t shift his gaze. He could feel her eyes on him, and he knew what he would see if he turned to look at her. Steel grey eyes that reflected blue when they met his gaze. He always wondered at those times that if he were seeing her through Harry or Hermione’s eyes if hers would be a steely green or steely brown.
“What do you mean?” Ron croaked. His voice was raw, sore. Crying too a lot out of a person, and even if his countenance was solid, set now, there was enough evidence in his voice that he had been letting his emotions free.
“The dragons,” Luna whispered, taking Ron’s arm delicately as Bill, Percy, Fred, and George carried in the long pine box. Her face was somber. Tonks was sobbing into Remus’s shoulder behind her. Hermione was clinging desperately to Ginny and visa versa as they fell over each other with grief. “They may be aggressive with their kin, but Ridgebacks cry when they lose one of their own.”
“Luna...” Ron started, his words catching on the lump in his throat as he watched his four remaining brothers settle the casket in front of the crowd.
“Ssshhh. Don’t speak,” The statement was whispered so softly that he almost lost it among the sounds of crying that surrounded them. “Listen. Do you hear them?”
“Hear...who?” Ron was baffled. All he could hear with the mixture of murmured prayers, quiet sobbing, and hollow reassurances.
“The cries. The dragons’ tears.”
It took three weeks, but Ron eventually got a letter from Charlie’s old partner Mitchell. On September 28th, the same day that they had had Charlie’s funeral, there had been wide spread mourning cries from the Norwegian Ridgebacks that inhabited the reservation.
