Ah. You interweave canon and your own plot so skillfully here. What an interesting idea (Snape makes his own Horcrux). It's so plausible, and the asphodel root is such a convincing, homey touch.

I really enjoyed this. You spun something off of canon here that is well-crafted and smoothly-written. Thank you so much!

Thank you! I'm glad that you feel it came across as plausible and that the asphodel root resonated as something he'd choose. And thanks to you and the other mods for creating and running this fest!

I've toyed with the idea that Snape made a Horcrux for awhile, but you've managed to craft it so beautifully; and I love that Severus chose to leave this world for a possible better one in the next great adventure.

I thought this was really moving; and when Dumbledore so casually cast aside the concern over Severus' soul, I think I hated him at that moment.

Thank you! I really, really wanted him to live, but for this story, that wasn't how he wanted it to go. I'm glad you found it moving. (And now I firmly return to the beliefs in your icon.)

and when Dumbledore so casually cast aside the concern over Severus' soul, I think I hated him at that moment.

You and me both. I think that's why this was the prompt that jumped out at me.

It worked perfectly in this story; you did it really credibly, and I think I like most that he chose a new path, one entirely of his own making (with all of his soul.)

We're definitely kindred spirits, because it would have been this prompt which snagged me; but you have more than capably filled it.

It's funny, but I've not been a Dumbledore fan since the second book, however, I really disliked him in the seventh ... actively and deeply. I always wanted Harry to turn some of his petulant anger into something a little more cerebral; to really look at what Dumbledore did, not what he talked about or how benevolent he tried to be.

can't actually read the warning as you've set it up. White text on light blue background is tough on the eyes....

This is lovely, though. Much more satisfying rendering of these scenes.

Thanks for sharing it.

Drat. I'm afraid I don't know how to change it. When I tested it, it came out as white on dark blue. I borrowed the code from a site I found when I Googled "how to code a highlight for spoiler warning." So I don't actually, er, know quite how it works.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, though. Thank you!

Nice, and the end was beautiful, also a little heart-breaking. I love the entire scene of it, with Severus' realization, and the Silver Doe smiling when Severus finally took a path for himself. He deserved that, after all these years. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you! I'm glad to hear that you love it. Yes, he does deserve a path of his own at last.

He wasn't sure what happened after one died. He wasn't sure that he cared. It had to be different than the life he'd known, and perhaps that was what he truly needed.

I love this line, and this whole fic.
