Snake had been settling in the past few days in Canyon Ridge, thanks to his new...housekeeper and Constantine. The housekeeper had the most to do with it though and Snake tried to keep neat for her. Didn't want to overwork her since she was benefitting him, after all ( Read more... )

"Yes, Snake, I'm back." Zelda had been over to the store, and moved to put milk and a few other staples into the refrigerator ( ... )

"S'good," he said, standing and intending to put everything away for her. Damn woman had beaten him to the punch.

"Princess, I would have put it up for you. You didn't have to."

"Oh, that's all right. There wasn't much." She waved off the concern. "I didn't want to disturb you. Would you like me to bring you some coffee while you're reading?"

It was odd, but for some reason, Zelda took a great deal of comfort from feeling like someone needed her -- even if, as she knew full well, Snake didn't really. It made it seem less frivolous that she was in Canyon Ridge, like she had been pulled there for a purpose.

Snake shook his head. "No, don't need anything. Water'd be fine, if you want to get me a glass?"

Dammit, he hated asking her for things.

"All right, I'll bring it over." It would have amused Zelda if she realized just how much he hated to ask her for anything, considering that her being his "housekeeper" had been his own idea.

She retrieved the water glass and brought it to the couch, setting it on a nearby table within his reach. Moving across the room, she started dusting the little set of shelves in one corner, humming quietly.

"So what is it you're reading, again?"

Snake was glad Zelda didn't turn around, because now he got an unobstructed view of one of the reasons he loved Levi Strauss for inventing jeans. Zelda's ass was nice and firm and he watched for a few long moments before answering her.

"Dickens. Think it's Bleak House, but they all sound the same after a while."

"I'm not familiar with any of the works of Mr. Dickens, but what I have seen since my arrival here," Zelda replied, lifting a tchotchke and dusting beneath it. "The one about the boy -- Oliver Twist -- was very sad."

She turned around, and started. Was he staring at her...? "Is...something wrong?"

Snake quickly shot his eyes up to her face. "No, nothing's wrong, princess. Oliver Twist's a good one. I liked it better than this one, but I prefer Nicholas Nickleby."

"I've not seen a copy of that," Zelda replied, setting aside her dustcloth, "though if I notice it at the store I'll pick it up for you. What is it about, that you enjoy it so?"

Getting Snake into a literary discussion was, she'd shortly discovered, always a good way to pass the time.

Snake shrugged. "Kid's always told he won't amount to anything and overcomes it. I like stories like that--inspires hope in the hopeless."

Zelda smiled. "I like them too. Particularly in difficult times, when hope is a precious commodity."

She looked outside. "I should probably start dinner. Are you hungry for anything in particular?" She always asked, even though he always said that anything she made was fine with him.

"Anything's fine with me," he said, predictably. "And hope's the thing with feathers, you know."

"I know." She smiled, and started examining the dinner options. "Ham and roasted potatoes, I think. Oh, and I did want to ask..."

Zelda paused in her dinner preparations to pick up a book she'd lain on the table. "I found this in the store and wondered if you know anything about it. This Shakespeare individual wrote a great many plays, by the look of things."

Snake's mouth curved into a grin. Mei Ling had re-introduced him to Shakespeare and he couldn't thank her enough.

"Playwright from England. Most of his plays are pretty well known where I'm from."

"Oh, good. Since it was in this world, I imagined you had most likely heard of him." Zelda glanced at Snake over her shoulder. He seemed pleased. "You like his work, then? I haven't read plays with anyone in a long time, but I thought it might be an amusing enough way to pass an evening at home."

Snake's lips curled into a smile. "Think it'd be fine, yeah. That's what I did back in Alaska for the most part, read."
