Screw the Critics anyway. Part 2

Jun 22, 2006 09:38

I was perusing the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine (which apparently I have a subscription to) the other day and on page 77 I found an article titled Critic Proof?
Wherein the Stone's movie critic condemns the movie studios for their releasing of movies without submitting them for critical appraisal.

Personally, I think this is the smartest thing the studios have EVER done.

The critic goes on to outline to us (we poor, ignorant masses) the nefarious scheme of the corporations to hold sway over our (fragile, limited) perceptions. It is made abundantly clear that without our saintly guardians of the Critical Profession Hollywood's shiny media machine would freely swindle the lot of us into watching whatever drek they cared to ram down our (huge, undifferentiating) gullets. Who do these studios think they are? Daring to simply release a film into the public domain without seeking the blessing of a higher authority?

Pretentious, self-important jackass!

Y'see, the thing is not all movies are Oscar bound. And I think that's what the studios have finally realized. Nacho Libre, Click and The Fast & the Furious 3: Tokyo Drift are popcorn/cate movies.

Why submit a flick for critical scathing when all you want is box office receipts?

Instead of courting the critics the studios are putting together an ad campaign and letting the dollars decide.

Opening Box Office Weekend

Nacho Libre $27.5 million
Tokyo Drift $24 million

(neither breaking any records, but not too bad either)

Seeing critics eat crow ... priceless.
