Announcing Evan James Kobett! Born at home at 8:09am this morning. 8lbs 6oz, 20 inches long and healthy as can be. Only six hours of labor - it went really fast!

I woke up about 2am with some really bad cramping, thought I just had to go to the bathroom and got up to sit on the toilet to no avail. I decided it probably wasn't just having to go to the bathroom at this point since I realized the cramping was coming in waves - really powerful waves that were WAY stronger than the contractions I'd been having the last three days or so.

I decided it wasn't worth waking Jei up yet, since I was doing OK on my own, and I spent a couple of hours alternating between rocking on the birth ball, sitting on our glider, sitting on the toilet, and laying in bed. Laying in bed seemed to make the contractions worse, though, so I didn't spend much time there.

Around 4am, I decided that I really needed Jei to be awake to squeeze my hand and be there for support, so I woke him up. The contractions kinda freaked him out since they were so strong and SO close together (they started around 5 minutes and went to about 3 REALLY quickly). He made the executive decision that it was time to call Amy (our midwife). I spoke with her and told her we didn't need her there yet, so she said to try to eat something and to keep in touch.

I spent the next couple hours getting in and out of the tub, sitting on the toilet, rocking on the glider, and bouncing on the birth ball during contractions, which were starting to get longer and even stronger (I hadn't thought it was possible!). Jei got a hold of my dad on instant messenger and asked him to have mom come over. She arrived around 7:15/7:30 and my dad wasn't far behind her. I spent a little more time in the tub, and then I felt like I had to push. I tried not pushing since our midwife wasn't there yet (Jei called her almost as soon as mom got there, since she looked at me and knew it wasn't going to be long). In the middle of a contraction I decided I ABSOLUTELY could not be in the tub anymore and moved to the bed, stopping to hang off mom's neck during contractions a couple times.

Laboring with mom... this was probably around 7:30 or 7:45

Mom started to get a little worried because I said that I felt burning when I was pushing. We were REALLY hoping Amy would get here, and soon.

Luckily, she did, because at 8:09 (about 40 minutes after calling Amy, about 15 or 20 after she arrived), this was the scene in our bedroom:

Jei catching his firstborn son... Amy supervises

Welcome to the world, Evan.

I was a little bit shocked... I had been preparing for a REALLY long labor, as is customary in my mom's family.

Jei takes another peek at our little one.

The whole family relaxes a little bit.

He nursed like a champ right from the start. Pardon the extraordinarily messy hair. :-)
