early this year i was contacted by a Detective from the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, seeking information about one of their former Chiefs, one Lawrence Tierney Sr., my grandfather. he held the position during WW2 back when the Department was known as the NYC Aquaduct Police. here he is, 2nd from the right:
it turns out that this Detective has made it his side project to reconstruct the history of his Department, and spends time rummaging through the old filing cabinets looking through old correspondence, photos, etc. over the months i've sent him photos i had of Larry Sr., and he has sent me correspondence between "the Chief" and the US Army regarding how to best guard against German saboteurs. it's been fun.
the Detective said that there is tons of stuff to go through, but that he has the rest of his career to get to it, and that's when i had an idea --would it be possible for him to get the help of some local archivists? maybe he could contact a local institution with a program and get some advice or even some students to help him out. he could get a lot more done that way, and get it done right.
people?
