"Do one thing every day that scares you"

My phobia of hairdressers began when I was 14. My hair was down to below my waist, and, being shy, I loved the protective feel of it around my arms and shoulders. I loved the way it flowed behind me when I swam underwater; the way it clung to me when I emerged onto the beach. I felt like a mermaid. And I loved the fact that people found its length ( Read more... )

I also had a phobia of hairdressers for a similar reason, though I never wore my hair that long as a kid. It looks great!

I do not have a fear of hairdressers, but I do frequently cut my own hair. My cuts may not be great, but they are free. My husband often says, "The difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut is about two weeks."

I've been mulling over that one for a day or so now, and I still don't get it. Please explain it to me. Slowly.

Oh, wait... after a couple of weeks, they both look the same... right? :)

I am totally the same way about hairdressers - I hate going to them, and only go when my hair is getting way too long.

Hell, I wrote about it back in 1996!

I am so very glad I didn't read that blog entry BEFORE I went for the chop! Jeez... I had no idea guys went through that sort of agony too.

But, wait--aren't you a computer nerd of some sort? I thought they were exempt from the needing-a-haircut-for-a-job rule.

Is the picture of the girl with the blue flippers you with your hair bleached a bit by living in the sun? If so, it does seem as though the hair-dresser back then didn't do the terrible job you thought she'd done (other than not properly getting your consent!), as it looks well shaped - like a natural mane.

In contrast, your current hair-dresser has been more conventional and somewhat less artistic in keeping it level at the back. Have you been noticing it feel much lighter? I'm not sure you've lost enough to make washing and drying it significantly easier. It should get caught in fewer things though!

Yes, that's me with the flippers. I entirely agree with you. I gather that the level look is fashionable or something. Meh. I just let her get on with it and do her own thing. My current look is still, I think, an improvement on my old one.

Yes, it feels lighter and requires entirely different head movements to get it out of my face. I suspect I'll be spraining my neck less often now...

Hah! He might act blasé, but it took a bit of convincing to get his cut once, too. In any case...

You look lovely!! Bravo for overcoming your fear, AND helping out a child. You rock!

Hahaha! That's interesting... And thanks.

Here's to your very short, very crimson hair. When I told Bunty about my nightmare, he grinned and said, "actually, that would be quite fun."

Haha, yeah, he would say that!

The short crimson hair is long gone, I'm afraid, but never forgotten. It was my favourite of my hairscapades...I'd love to have it red again someday. I did also quite like the green, though: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/176/454922730_8ae4f29012.jpg?v=0

Now, it's been growing out for some time, but still above my shoulders (given that I was bald last January). I also cut my own hair. When it's short and curly, it takes more than a month to look proper again, if you do a bad job of it...

Ah, yes, I remember seeing that green hair before...

You seem to have a lot of hairscapades.
