what is going on in our country is fucking ridiculous. please listen to the mayor of new orleans, as interviewed last night:
http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/09/02/katrina.nagin/ i think the problem is that the entire government, democrat or republican, is corrupt as shit. neither side is better than the other, they are both media saavy, greedy old white dudes who could give two shits about poor, uneducated blacks in new orleans. if kerry had been elected, the situation there would be no better. however, if we hadn't cut federal funding to states beginning over twenty years ago, maybe poorer states (louisiana is 4th, mississippi 1st in poverty rates) wouldn't have such a prominent lack in resources and support. everyone knew that a category 5 hurricane would destroy and flood new orleans. so why was there so little preparation? 200,000 were in that city who were too sick or poor to leave. why was there no government effort to get those people out?
how can people be so inhumane that extending compassion and support to these victims is a fucking exercise? is our culture really so backwards that high gasoline prices are more upsetting than the fact that several thousand people have already died and thousands more are stranded in horrible conditions.
in a matter of weeks, these storm victims will return to towns where nothing is left. mississippi's economy depended on those casinos. biloxi is gone. slidell is gone. every town along that coast is gone. mccomb, where i lived in mississippi, is an hour north of new orleans and it is heavily damaged, no water, no electricity, and looting has begun there. jackson is another hour north. they don't have electricity or water either. all of these thousands, millions of people are now homeless. when they drain the waters, the body count is going to blow our minds. this is serious stuff. this is going to affect our country in a potentially large way.
just go donate something. if you want to donate supplies, you can bring them to my apartment. give me your email and i will give you directions. i will then take the supplies to belmont for the drive they are doing.
