From Tales of Narnia's Golden Age: How Four Humans Changed The World by the Faun Minaeus:

...About the Queen Susan, it was often assumed that she was called "The Gentle" as it was well-documented she did not ride to war, along with her brothers and sister.

However, despite the destruction of the original Cair Paravel, and subsequent loss of the great library there and many of the texts that existed therein, quite a few were rescued and kept safe by the Narnians during the years of the Telmarine Occupation. From these, it is revealed that Queen Susan was a most gifted archer; in fact, was Head Archer in the Narnian army, under her brother the High King, and was responsible for the training of all the archers.

These texts also reveal, that while it is true that The Gentle did not ride to battle with the Narnian army, she, in fact, commanded her own elite squadron of archers from Cair Paravel itself, and was solely responsible for defending the castle against enemy attack on several occasions. As we see in several different schematics of the castle (see The Golden Age Visualized by Tillamin the Dwarf and The History of Narnia's Great Castles by Lord Glennian of Beruna), the great castle of Cair Paravel was built with six arrow slits along each side of the battlements; at least, six were visible from the outside. From the interior of the castle, it was apparent that there were three arrow slits that connected to each exterior slit, thus allowing three archers to direct their arrows simultaneously.

With these multiple arrow slits, under the command of Queen Susan, the Royal Archers were able to swiftly and forcibly defend Cair Paravel against all attackers. There is evidence (The History of Narnia's Great Castles pp. 278-290) this defense was Susan's idea, and she designed the modifications to the castle.

There is also evidence to indicate that Queen Susan dealt swiftly and firmly with any prisoners capture during attempted attacks on Cair Paravel. Very few were imprisoned and lived to tell the tale.
