I've been at my job for a year now... if you know me you know I work in radio. We're in trouble of becoming redundant, radio is I mean.
I don't want it to be that way but if the major companies don't get their heads out of their asses it's going to happen. I don't know what all the other companies are doing but I work for Clear Channel and they're trying this thing called "less is more"
I'm probably violating one of my non disclosure contracts mentioning it on here but it's just cutting down on the talk and commercials and being able to fit in 2-4 more songs per hour.
The thing is it's going to take more than that... first off we have to work our playlists our better, playing the top 40 stuff is fine playing older top 40 stuff is fine, but we need more Album Oriented Rock, B-sides and good tracks off of older albums... we do a little of that on my station but I think a little more would be a good thing.
The biggest thing is letting the Jocks have on air contact with the listeners. Let the Jocks on live instead of voice tracked and let them have personalities instead of just "you're listening to, that was, I am, this is, you're listening to..."
Even if Radio becomes totally Satellite driven (which I don't see) people are still going to want local content, news, traffic, weather...there will always be a place for radio.
It comes down to personality and playlists... the profits may be more modest but there is a future in radio we just have to grab it.
Ok I'm done...
