#Supernatural Review 6x04

Oct 20, 2010 15:44

There are moments in Supernatural that leave me bouncing in my seat, or rather my bed since that's where I watch every episode, on my laptop. This week's episode was that episode, it left me feeling completely satiated. The lack of Sam and Dean weren't so much a lack of Sam and Dean, because their scenes were just as huge and compelling as Bobby's. I appreciated how the issue of Dean worrying about Sam, and Sam seemingly different has come up in this episode. Even though we didn't get any kind of answer to what it is that is making our Sammy different. We were still given the respect form the writers, that they haven't forgotten nor will they leave us hanging regarding that storyline.

So far we have seen a lot of what Sam is like through Dean's eyes, we feel what Dean feels and see what Dean sees, regarding Sam. We are all Dean Winchester looking in on Sam's story and life. When Dean feels scared for Sam, so do we. When he gets pissed off at Sam for keeping secrets, so do we. When Dean gets emotional regarding Sam, so do we. We are watching Sam's storyline unfold through Dean's eyes. Which has me wondering, will the reveal of Sam's time in hell be through Dean's eyes as well, or will we get to see it through Sam's words and feelings and mind? Will we be given that opportunity to understand Sam through Sam, or will we be seeing it and feeling it through Dean?

Personally, a Sam POV of Dean would be interesting and I would love to see Dean through Sam's eyes.

# So, what are demons?
Well, according to Supernatural they are angry spirits with huge egos. I love how they're connecting previous season facts with this new season. In season 2, In My Time Of Dying, Dean was a spirit and he wanted to stay one as long as possible in hopes of getting back into his body. But the reaper, Tessa, told him that he would be alone and eventually go crazy and grow into an angry spirit. It's the same with demons, they were souls in hell who endured enough torture to twist and manipulate them into demonic spirits. It's not too far fetched to believe that getting rid of a demon is as easy as getting rid of your run of the mill ghost/spirit. In fact it makes quite a bit of sense, if demons are angry souls, no longer possessing their own bodies, then digging them up and setting them on fire is one way to get rid of them. Of course it's not so easily done as said, Crowley proved that to us in this episode. It took Bobby a year to figure out how to trap Crowley and get his soul back.

So, even though the lore may be the same with ghost/spirits and demons - burn the remains to get rid of the entity. It's much more tasking to do so with a demon than it is with a ghost/spirit. Especially if it requires the boys to go international ;) Demon killing knife and the colt is so much easier! ... and um ... less painful?

# If Crowley is king of hell, then where is Lucifer and what is he?
Interesting question me, I have no idea! If Lucifer is indeed trapped in his cage, then perhaps his demons have come to the conclusion that he is no longer the big boss anymore. After all he did get bitch slapped by Sam and sent back to his hole, no more true power, no more respect. However, if Lucifer is no longer in the cage, but let's say in Sam's head *wink wink* (you know who you are, who came up with this theory), then that means Crowley took the position before any other demon could. Crowley being the boss of the underworld puts Lucifer at a disadvantage, unless Raphael is able to complete his mission of gathering heaven's weapons and putting the Apocalypse back on the map. Even when Lucifer was trapped in his cage, demons feared him and obeyed him. But all that changed.

If Raphael succeeds in putting the Apocalypse back on the map, then I wonder ... will the Antichrist come back into play as well. Sam was the vessel of Lucifer and he was able to flip the switch back on and see the light. I'm betting Lucifer doesn't want to bank on Sam anymore, so perhaps his reincarnation through Jesse, the Antichrist will be their next plan.

# Was Sam ruler of hell when he was down there?
Perhaps. Sam taking that control back from Lucifer and jumping into the hole, trapping them both, perhaps it made Sam what he was destined to be - the boy king. So far we haven't seen any true interactions between demons and Sam, but it would be interesting to see how a demon reacts with Sam around.

Crowley and Sam's little exchange in the grave yard got me wondering. Crowley calls Sam a moose and tells him to go get bent. Sam stands there and gives him a very heatless look. Where as the older Sam would have given the bitchface and a very hateful look. Of course it could all be jotted down to Crowley being shook up that he was almost fried extra crispy and that Sam is just different. But I can't help but feel that perhaps it's a demon just a little bit shook up around the boy king himself. I would love to see a true exchange between a demon and Sam, just to see if behavior on both sides is different from what we've witnessed in previous seasons.

# Why didn't they just kill Crowley?
Well, why didn't Castiel just kill Balthazar?
First, they had a deal, they stuck to the deal. Second, I really think it's more about Crowley being able to help them when they will eventually need it. The boys didn't torch his bones, he owes them one. Balthazar helped Castiel, Castiel owed him one. Honestly, I'm glad they didn't kill Crowley. He's a demon they know, someone who helped them and probably would wind up helping them again. He could end up being an ally, one that will sometimes stab you in the back with your own shiv, but an ally nonetheless ;) ... although, I'm pretty sure Bobby would have killed him. He didn't seem too bent up about killing the female demon.

# Best parts of the episode?
All of it! No, seriously. I loved every single part of the episode. Loved the look into that year of Bobby's life when Sam died and Dean went off to Lisa. Loved that we get to see Bobby and what he truly means to the boys and the town he lives in, damn there are more hunters out there than we know! Probably all local. BEST parts! The odd couple that was Bobby/Rufus. I would not mind a spin off with those two, it truly was awesome and I'm hoping we get to see more of that in future episodes. It doesn't have to be Bobby centric, but it can have moments where he and Rufus get together for a hunt or to help the boys. In fact I would love to see ALL of them get together on a hunt, can you imagine the hilarity that would ensue! LOL!

Sam and Dean in the small European car. Ain't it funny that the previous episode Sam is back in the Impala with Dean, and directly after that episode we see them in a European car. It's like they're teasing us, the boys are back together, but they're not really back together until we see them both synchronize entering the Impala and then driving off as classic rock blasts in the background! Then, only then will they truly be back together.

Sam and Dean getting scolded by Bobby. However, not really sure why Sam was dragged into it. I mean as far as I can remember Dean was the only one calling Bobby to whine about Sam, and from the look on Sam's face I think he felt the same way. I guess it's the case of the siblings curse, don't matter if you done it or not I'm teaching y'all a lesson you better listen and straighten up.

Sam and Dean letting Bobby know that they appreciate him and that they were wrong for taking him for granted.

The next door neighbor, she was really sweet and I loved how Bobby got really aggressive with the demon in the cellar after he got his peach cobbler. It was like he had a burst of energy - a beautiful woman making me food, seems to like me, hell yeah I wanna live! Bobby you sly dog!

"BALLS!!!"

Sam getting flung around by the Lamia while Dean was on the phone with Bobby. That whole scene was done so well.

Speaking of which, Jensen did a spectacular job directing this episode. It felt like it was done by someone who knew the show, not only as the character but also as someone who truly knows the show inside and out. It was really well done and Jensen Ackles deserves all the props and praise. I won't be surprised if they ask him to do another one. Whether he says okay to it or not, I won't be surprised if it gets brought up again. I certainly won't mind watching another episode directed by him. Maybe a Sam centric one ;)

# Worst parts of the episode? Or rather, parts that had me going - "poor Bobby"?
Dean hanging up on Bobby without so much as a thank you. I was angry with Dean though, it was more because I felt bad for Bobby.

Bobby never finding enough time and peace to eat his cobbler. Poor thing.

My rating for the episode: 10 out of 10!
