Short summary : When Sam gets his letter to Stanford, Dean sides with him, leaving their father and hunting behind. The boys' first hurdle to overcome is when the Impala breaks down in Long Beach California, stranding them. The timely arrival of one Evan Lorne helps to get them on their feet and ready for a new life.
