The airdates in season four apparently got seriously whacked. The book I have has them in one order, yet they aired (and are on the DVDs) in another order. This discrepancy bothers me.
Herrenvolk
Um, hello, movie. I'm beginning to understand more and more why people were so disappointed with the movie. It was a great episode, but it didn't really introduce anything new. By the way, Mulder and Scully are SO SEXY in season four. They just look so hot. Yum.
Home
I remember when this episode first aired, I taped it and watched it with my dad, and he was so disturbed by it he asked me to tape over the episode. I didn't (ooh rebellion), but it doesn't really matter now. This episode is totally gross yet has some great Mulder and Scully moments, like when they are talking about having children. On the DVD is a deleted scene when the pair first get into the bathroom where they examine the dead infant. The jostle around for a bit in the enclosed space, and there's some about to speak but not action from Scully. Mulder says, "That's just my pen light." Scully says, "Oh, I thought a long-standing curiosity had just been satisfied." SOOO good. But I understand why they cut it.
Teliko
Dude, Carl Lumbly is in this episode! Alias represent!
Unruhe
This episode was very creepy with the lobotomy thing. Scully in danger and Mulder rescuing her is always good, too.
The Field Where I Died
This is a great episode. It is brilliantly directed, shot, and acted. The subject matter was good, especially the weaving of present day with past lives. It's too bad I HATE IT because it is anti-Mulder/Scully. Boo!
Sanguinarium
Yeah, I was watching this episode, and I was like, ew, blood, ew, gross, and my stomach was turning and yeah. Decent effort.
Musings of a Cigarette-Smoking Man
This episode is sooo cool. I loved him wanting to be a writer and him writing his fictionalized life story which Frohike later picks up on. I love the throwaway dialogue about the Bills not winning the Superbowl. GOOD STUFF.
Tunguska
I am a huge fan of the Tunguska/Terma two-parter. Stuff with Krycek is always good. This would have made a decent premise for the movie, and they could have done even more with it. They are definitely some of the most movie-like episodes. Okay, let me talk about Marita Covawhatever for a minute. In the book that I have (the official guide to the fourth season), whenever she comes up they are all like, "Ohhh...we don't know why she's interested in Mulder...probably because she wants some Mulder ass." See, I don't think that was the deal at all. They never do anything. She's just mysterious, not horny. And in this episode is where she tells him she can get him a passport and he says how long and looks at his watch and then in the next scene where he meets Krycek just a couple of minutes have passed (i.e. not enough time to have sex). Shippers hate her because she's a woman, but whatever, she's just an informant. Get over it.
Terma
(So this episode started a new DVD, and Netflix erroneously sent me the previous disk again, which I sent back to them. So it was a WHOLE WEEK in between Tunguska and Terma for me, although when I watched them originally that is how it was, but still. I didn't know if Mulder was dead or alive. It was scary.) Okay, since I didn't talk about it previously, I liked the whole black cancer-project-Russian-test-etcetera storyline. The congressional committee thing was neat, but I am not sure how realistic it was. Scully spends the night in jail! Yes! And, I admit, I shamelessly watched the "Terma hug" OVER AND OVER AND OVER. "Feels good to put my arms around you. Both of them." The look on her face when she gets up from the table is AWESOME. They are so happy to see each other and it is SO CUTE. ♥
Paper Hearts
It was interesting how this episode opened up the possibility of a more earthly explanation for Samantha's disappearance, but having already had episodes like Herrenvolk, it actually doesn't make sense. Mulder goes for it a bit and is all angsty and that was good television. And he hugs Scully around the waist at the end. Cute.
El Mundo Gira
X-Files generally sucks at doing Spanish/Mexican/etc episodes (see Teso Dos Bichos) and this one is no exception.
Leonard Betts
This episode aired after the Super Bowl, and it makes perfect sense why. It has EVERYTHING: gross-out factor, mystery, humor, good Mulder/Scully interaction, science, and a relevant topic like cancer. But oh, Scully, cancer! Nooo! I liked how at the end she didn't tell Mulder immediately...until Memento Mori, like the bestest episode ever.
