From Saturday to Saturday

I'm pretty slack when it comes to contributing to this blog. But the last week has been a bit more wild than usual. It's now Sunday and I figured it was about time to write down some of this insanity. It all started last Saturday. Eight days ago...

And to top it all off the Tigers lost the World Series. I'm still kinda pissed about that one.

"What's this? Some dude made a website where you can print out Northwest boarding passes and get past security." "Now some congressman is calling for him to be arrested. Same old anti-terrorist bullshit." This is considered bullshit?? So basically your friend gave the criminal element in this world the ability to create a fake boarding pass and get on a plane in the US. He couldn't just write to the FBI and tell them that this is possible again like the situations in the past but he had to published it on the Web for all to see. Dude it is because of this kind of extreme negligence that rally bad things happen, all because your friend had to prove a vulnerability in our aviation industry, and make fun of our current administration. Well that is just dandy, now anyone who had any kind of wrongful intent could have copied that script and is right now exploiting that vulnerability. Smutticus, I have read most of the posts you have made to this site and I consider you to be a really intelligent person, but you are a complete ( ... )

Did you read my links section? The world was told this in 2003 and again in 2005 by a United States congressman. This is not new and it's not original. Any criminal/terrorist element already knew this.

I could complain about you bad formatting and word choice,
OR I could now explain to you why security through obscurity is a bad idea,
OR I could point out the fallacy of reason that assumes criminals are too dumb to figure this out themselves,
OR I could wax philosophical on the importance of criticism in a free society.

But these are all things you can research elsewhere. They've all been written about ad nauseam elsewhere by people much smarter than both of us.

So instead I'll just hope that you conduct some basic analysis before you post again so I don't have to conduct another verbal smack-down.

I did read your links section, which made me think why your friend is repeating history. Is your friend trying to remind the criminal element on how to do this all over again or perhaps expose a new way to do it again ( ... )

I think we need to clarify the difference between identifying or finding an issue and publicizing it. Chris didn't find a new issue. He didn't even publicize an issue that was only known in a small community to a larger community. This issue was already well known and publicized publicly since 2003. And this issue did NOT require any special equipment or expertise to exploit. Merely the ability to format and print a piece of normal paper. Then cut it in the shape of a boarding pass ( ... )

Just to complete the circle. Today the Feds dropped charges against Chris. He's coming to visit in January. So now we have something to party about. He told me confidentially a couple of weeks ago. But it's cool that it's public now.
