you know you've been watching too much 'Wire' when...

This morning I woke up facing my open window. Bleary-eyed, the first thing I notice in that rectangular opening between the blinds and the window sill was the logo of a New Jersey state trooper car, parked in that diagonal parking-lot style where the ass of the car sticks out into the street (as opposed to parallel, along the street). Then I notice that there are several of these cars parked in the same way. My immedeate thought while waking up to this was "I don't remeber falling asleep in New Jersey, why is there a parking lot with trooper cars outside my window?!"

But then I realized I was still in my room and that there were not only NJ state trooper cars, but over two dozen other cars parked in the same way along Greenwood avenue, including several NYC police cars as well. There were 'police do not cross' barriers blocking off the avenue on which the cars were parked and also various different men wearing different official policing-type uniforms sparsely milling about on the street. I even also saw a camera man and a reporter-type lady walking down my street away from where all the action was.

My next though after that? "DRUG BUST!!!", of course, and all sorts of Wire-esque and Soprano-like scenarios began to run through my often over-active brain (amazing considering I hadn't even had my coffee yet).

Scenario 1: They were busting the high-times guy that lives accross the street. I mean, that greenhouse must be there for a reason.
Scenario 2: They were busting the crime ring that clearly runs out of the pizza place down the street. Again, that back room? So clearly shady. (This was especially fun given my theory about their mafia ties and the whole New Jersey-mafia connection).
Scenario 3: The mild-mannered lebanese guys who run the deli accross the street were a part of some big crime scheme. I like them a lot, I would never have included them on this list were it not for the fact that most of the cop cars were parked right in front of the deli. This particular theory was dispelled immedeately when I saw when of the guys bring out a sandwhich to one of the cops.

The story-making lasted about fifteen minutes as I began to put together the pieces of the last two days and realized that all the purple ribbons etc were there because a former police officer had died in Iraq and the wake was being held at the church down the street from my house. Giuliani was there apparently which would explain what all the security was about.

What a strange way to wake up...
