Rants and more

The past week was pretty hectic.

Jakob, the German exchange student, got here last Monday and stayed here up until this morning.  They're on their way to New York City now.  Right before he left, he said he thinks he's going to miss Kentucky more than New York whenever he goes back home.  Then he gave me a hug.

Awww.

He is a really cool guy.  I just felt bad that I didn't get to hang out with him much because of school and work.  There was so much I wanted to do but didn't have the time.  He says he still had a great time, though, so not all is lost.

Endless shrimp started up at Red Lobster again.  Last night at work just reminded me how much I HATE this damn promotion.  Cheap ass rednecks come in herds thinking they'll break the record amount of scampi eaten.

They never come close.

They take up all of our time, just sitting there ordering more shrimp and asking for more drinks/biscuits.  Then, when they pay, they barely tip 10%.

A guy named Dustin, for example, had this one table of about 5 john deere cap wearing git-r-done guys who stayed at the restaurant ordering shrimp after shrimp for two hours.  Their bill was over $100.  They tipped him $3.00, and Dustin's not a bad server at all.  He was nice, kept their drinks filled, and had their orders correct.  His tip should have been more like $20 for all the running they made him do.  Among five guys that's just $5 each.  That's all; not too much to ask for.  But $3????

The real problem, I think, is that people don't know how to tip.  They see that $1.25 off of a $20 check as a great way of saying, "thank you," but in reality, the server translates it as, "fuck you."  We make $2.13 an hour, and that's not even going up with minimum wage increases, even though the cost of living still goes up.  That $1.25 doesn't pay my bills.

On a $20 check, 15% is $3.00 if the service was "good."  IF the service was "great!" you tip 20% or more.  That's $4.00 off of a $20 check.  If their service was poor, 10% ($2.00 off of $20) works as, "you did your job."  But if, and only if, the server openly said he/she hated you, kicked you purposefully in your shins, called your baby ugly, or spat in your food, then you can stiff him/her.  That $0.00 tip pretty much means they didn't do their job at all or they attacked you personally.  There is no in-between 10% and 0%.  It's either 0 or 10% or higher.

This is why when I go out to eat, I normally tip 20%+ even if the service wasn't all that great.  Someone earlier that day probably screwed them over, so I look at it as a kind reminder to not give up, because I've felt like giving up several times.  We've all been there before.  You feel so helpless.

It completely pisses me off when I go out to eat with people and I see that they tip shitty.  Pisses me off so much that it makes me second guess ever wanting to eat with them at all, and I don't need to mention any names-- you all know who you are.

So, it's going to be a rough 8 weeks for me.  Please forgive me in advance since I may be in a bad mood after work some nights and may not want to come out/chill.

I love you all.
