Um...so... I have an XBox 360. Now what?

My gamer friends gave me an XBox 360.  (Long story.)  I have no idea what games to look at for it, though I do have the advantage of working at a library that has 360 games in its collection.  I'm not a very skilled gamer, probably because I've never played video games much.  Does anyone know of particularly fun - but not insanely hard - games I ( Read more... )

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion! That was my gateway drug, er, game. The graphics are gorgeous and the gameplay is easy for a new player (BTW, I always play games on the easiest setting). I was so fascinated by the worldbuilding that I tried Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, just for fun, and was absolutely hooked. Note: Morrowind is MUCH harder at the beginning. I love this game and I still say that it is a horrible slog in the first few levels. Once you hit a certain point, it becomes effortless. Oblivion is the opposite, very easy at the beginning and progressively harder as you level up. One of the things I like most about both these games is customizing your character. You can play male or female and a number of races.

The ultimate in good looks right now is Red Dead Redemption, which also has a fantastic storyline. It's a classic Western, so pick it up if that's your genre. If it isn't, this game might not do much for you.

I started the first Fable and really enjoyed it. The biggest flaw I've found so far is that I couldn't save my hard-won equipment from the first, very long, training quest, until I had completed that quest in its entirety. I also wish I could play a female or character of color.

This week, I've been playing exclusively Fallout New Vegas. I'm not sure whether to recommend it or not. It's highly immersive, but can leave me feeling icky and depressed. I've decided I need to limit my time on the game--not stop playing it, necessarily, but keep the sessions short. Otherwise the setting freaks me out too much.

I also tried Jade Empire, and enjoyed what I played of it, but it hasn't hooked me yet.

Darn, the library doesn't have Oblivion (or any of the Fable games...they seem to be a bit short on Xbox 360 games compared to Wii and Playstation, which is weird). However, I might be able to borrow it from a friend. If so, I'll give it a shot.

(I'm trying to stick with free to start with. Buying things comes after I a) have some confidence I don't suck beyond hope and b) have a good idea what I'll like.)
