Writer's Block: Back to School

Ahhahaha.  I didn't finish high school the first time, why would I want to give it another shot?  Granted, high school would probably be a lot more fun if one were attending it with Buffy Summers or the Hardy Boys or any number of other fictional characters - largely because there'd be monsters to fight or mysteries to solve or other adventures to ( Read more... )

That would definitely be better than normal high school. :D

Actually, this was one of my post-book-abandonment WTF's towards Twilight. I'm supposed to believe a hundred-year-old vampire going to high school? I don't know any 25 year olds who would agree to go through actual teen-filled high school again!

I'm also in the Xavier's camp if I had to send my 14-year-old self somewhere else, though.

Yeah. I'm not sure whether Meyer is one of the .0000000001% of people who actually enjoyed high school or whether she just forgot that it was hell and no one would willingly endure it. Repeatedly. Or Sparklepires are masochists. Also possible.

Well, she also has her 16-year-old female protagonist complain that boys pay her attention and find her attractive. Not harass her, mind; just pay her the sort of attention most of us wanted and felt like freaks for not getting (or so I'm told. I didn't get there myself, of course). Thus, I'm of the opinion that Meyer is a moron. *nodnod*

The book was awful. It can be pretty much sumarized thus:

I must exile myself to Washington. Just 'cuz. And I'm weird and no one likes me. OMG! People like me! EWWWWWWWW! Oooh, freaky looking pretty people. I want. Oh, noes, he doesn't like me. (Edward: She smells so good. No, must not eat!) Wait, he likes me? No, he doesn't? Yes, he does? Yes, he does! Oh, noes, other vampires want to eat me! I think I'll take a nap. Oh, noes, other vampires have my mom! I think I'll give myself to them. Oh, noes, I'm unconscious. Oh, hospital and my sparklepire. All is well. Then he takes me to prom. The meany. *pout*

Yeah, going back to most high schools sounds like a utter misery. It might be slightly better if a) I get to keep my knowledge and hard-won wisdom and b) I get to be a protagonist. Protagonists get to do neat things that kind of make up for the whole hellhole bit. And I actually enjoyed the schoolwork part--I was just miserable on the social side of things, and protagonists almost automatically get a cool (or cool loser) crowd to hang out with ( ... )

You'd still have to make sure you were in the right genre. Being the protagonist in a straight-up teen drama (or even teen comedy) wouldn't be much of an improvement, if any.

High school is one of those things that may only be good when it's happening to someone else.
